It's actually a bit of a hike into the blazing sun and wind without much of a payoff. The cultural aspect is definitely interesting but could have been explained verbally just as easily without the amount of time spent on the hike.

An easy hike across lava fields along the Chain of Craters Road brings one to a well-marked petroglyph site. Please treat these ancient symbolic works with respect.

This is one of the short walks off Crater Rim Dr. Once there, there is a boardwalk, with signage, surrounding the petroglyphs.

We saw Pu'u Loa Petroglyphs hiking trail sign when we drove along Crate Rim Drive. On the trail, you can closely see the different formation of lava and carvings from Hawaiian ancesters which is amazing. I took many pictures there.

Really cool to see. Easy hike but longer than expected. I suggest learning what the glyphs are and then looking for specific carvings. Personally I look for fish and fisherman. Learning the local history and culture is a perfect fit to the spectacular natural environment.

This would not be my first hike recommendation in the park. There are much better ones. This one goes out to the the petroglyphs which are interesting but not thrilling like others.

The drawings are ok but nothing too spectacular or fancy. Now, the history behind the place, the reason why there are so many little holes in the rocks in unusual and much more interesting - to me - than the drawings. It's a quick walk from the car park though. The whole thing should be done in 30minutes if you... More

from the road. But it is a trail through the lava field. Still, its an easy hike from most people and has interpretive signs to enhance your knowledge of the ancient Hawaiians and their culture. Very little shade as it is a lava field, and don't forget to bring a bottle of water. Very interesting.

Worth the 1.4 mile hike over a lava field. 23,000 plus petroglyphs etched into a'a. Sand in your shoes. Bring water. Just when you think you have walked enough, it is just up the hill. Need a bench placed about 1/2 way in.

Great petroglyphs but if you get a guide you get to see/understand a LOT more. Very little protection from wind or sun can be found there so be ready. Not very long so take a gander.
