Short hike but better understood with guide

Worth the 1.4 mile hike over a lava field. 23,000 plus petroglyphs etched into a'a. Sand in your shoes. Bring water. Just when you think you have walked enough, it is just up the hill. Need a bench placed about 1/2 way in.

This hike is located near the end of Chain of Craters Road and is the Petroglyph Trail...about 1.4 miles total. The hike is mostly up and down a rocky area...definitely not smooth and paved...so wear decent shoes. It's not always clear if you are on the trail, so keep looking for the flat sand areas and then a pile of... More

The trail out to the site is not easy but worth the effort. The trail is not real marked but keep heading for the next pile of rocks and you will get there. The symbols are on both sides of the walk around and even before you get to the walkaround structure. Not sure why they thought writing in hot... More

The whole hike is about 1.5 miles and takes maybe 45 minutes to do. Once you are at the viewing area, there is a boardwalk that circles the main field of petroglyphs for easier viewing. The walk out the boardwalk is not particularly difficult, but it is over lava rock which makes it quite uneven. It is also very hot... More

Took about 45min to an hour to complete. Semi groomed trail over an old lava flow - the petroglyphs are viewed from a boardwalk that goes in a circle at the end of the trail. We enjoyed the walk and the information on the site at the end of the trail was interesting.

If you have never seen petroglyphs it is neat to see. We did see some along the way before we got to the big area where they are in abundance.

Nice side trip after doing the lava beach walk. Interesting array of characters distributed over a confined area.

A bit of a hike in and it is always hot on the lower part of the park so take water even though it doesn't look that far. Thanks to all of those that have made the rock pyramids to guide you along the trail
