Brooks River flows from Brooks Lake about a mile and a half long down to Naknek Lake. It is one of the earliest places where bears can feed on salmon, so they come to Brooks River in droves. There are several areas along the River that are bear-feeding hotspots. The most famous area is Brooks Falls where the big male... More

Rent some waders and a guide to view the wildlife (bears) in the river. You can reserve a guide for $55/hr per person from Brooks Lodge. You'll walk towards the Riffles platform and enter the water 50-75 yards from Brooks Falls. While in the river, you'll slowly make your way downstream while you take photos. Great perspective of bears for... More

This is one of th major reason people travel to Katmai National Park. The nice broad walk allows the best viewing in safety

This is the most amazing place we've been. Who could guess one could be surrounded by these massive brown bears & enjoy watching & photographing them in virtual peace? Our national park system has given us common folks a rare treat in nature. Watching them catch & eat the salmon was awesome. One of the highlights of our Alaska trip.... More

Bears, bears, bears. If you love to photograph wildlife, you;ll love Brooks River and Brooks Falls. You have to cross over the river to a viewing platform on the river on your way to the falls, so I am not sure why these are listed as two separate attractions. But you'll see bears everywhere, swimming, playing, and napping (mid-day is... More

Brooks Falls is the highlight but you can see bears along the Brooks river. Brooks river is a probably less than 2 miles long, connecting Naknek lake and Brooks lake. Brooks camp and lodge are on the Naknek lake side. I saw people wading and fishing along the river, sometimes quite close to fishing bears!

We flew in for this day trip with Bald Mountain Air from Homer. It's a 1,5 hour flight by floatplane. In the morning we had great views of Katchemak Bay, Mt Augustine and other volcanoes, the mountains and glaciers of Katmai NP. The return flight all was clouded so we only had a view just before landing in Homer. Packed... More

Spent the day in Brooks Lodge and of course visited the falls where the bears were catching the salmon. There were plenty of bears all up and down the river plus plenty of fly fisherman. Wonderful place to come not only to see the wildlife but to spend the day enjoying the fabulous scenery.
