We are in our early 40's & do a few challenging hikes a year in National Parks. This one was difficult but still enjoyable. We went on a cooler Monday & only saw around 25 people on the trail. That was perfect for us. The climbing part was fun & challenging but not too intense. I am only 5' 2''... More

I've mostly hiked in Colorado and was looking forward to hiking in this part of the country. A friend had done Old Rag Mountain before and recommended it. We put the mountain into Google Maps and ended up at Berry Hollow trailhead instead of the normal Old Rag trail head parking lot. I don't advise this, since going this route... More

Visited on a Sun to do the 9 mile hike. After the 0.8 mile access road hike to the trailhead, it goes upward immediately and is full of rocks and roots. This goes on for a while and then the fun boulder scramble starts. It seems longer than 1.5 miles. You get a full body workout, as you squeeze through... More

Yes hike it !!!! Don't forget the water. There are porta johns at the parking lot( use before you go)This was our longest hike..it ended up about 11.2 miles from the lower parking. It was a beautiful day. The hardest part was the trip was on the way up with lots and lots of switchback and elevation...rest breaks( on boulders)along... More

Firstly, I should probably qualify myself for this review. I'm middle-aged and moderately fit (read: dad bod.) The 9 mile, or so hike is beautiful, typical of Shenandoah, but that's not what you should take away from this write up. The trek to the summit is challenging, mentally and physically. Hiking up the steep mountain can be tough for some,... More

I am extremely active and have an athletic frame. I usually work out 12-14 hours a week with running, boot camp, insanity, biking...etc. I found this hike to be one of the most difficult things I have ever done. It didn't matter that it was steep and long, I just wasn't prepared for the amount of rock climbing. It was... More

It was a cold rainy day in late April. The fog was so thick we couldn't see anything beyond 100 feet. The rocks were so slippery that any misstep could spell disaster. But it was phenomenal. Highly recommended in any weather.

Tired, but worth it ... take lots of water, a snack and some good climbing shoes and please do not go back, get to the end and enjoy the trip and the view.

Beautiful ~9.5mile hike, with a gorgeous scenery up top. It can be quite challenging at times- pretty steep at first and lots of sliding down big rocks and finding your way out in the big rock scramble, but very worth it! A fun challenge and a great day out. We saw lots of small children as well. We did it... More

The hike up and down old rag was totally worth it! We hiked up clockwise, so didn't hit the rock scramble till the way down. The sacramble was ridiculously fun and really challenging. Great teamwork as our teenagers helped guide us all through the challenges. We squeezed, slid, scrunched, and crawled our way through. Sometimes picking up the trail blue... More
