A visit to Jiufen is worth your time. Please note though that it is a bit far from Taipei. It is best to book your transportation through a travel agency. The place is charming with a lot of food choices. We went in January and it was raining so it dampened our trip a bit. Should you go during the... More

While there is some truth to previous reviewers complaining that this is a tourist trap, there is a uniqueness and charm to hillside town worth experiencing. This place is a trap if you let it be, by visiting the expensive teahouses and buy souvenirs; remember they exists because there are silly tourists willing to pay. But you're not a silly... More

If you are thinking of a quaint mountain village with red lanterns dotting door posts and friendly mountain 'folks', you will be disappointed. In summary the 'old street' is a mountain version of Shilin night market. To go to the cobble stone streets, you first have to navigate past heavy vehicle and human traffic around the bus stations. Be careful... More

It seems to be most known for being the inspiration behind "Spirited Away," but there is so much more to it than that. So much great Taiwanese street food, shopping that ranges from kitschy junk to quality gifts, modern cafes with excellent views, traditional tea services in mountainside teahouses... You can easily pass half the day here. It does get... More

Try to go early or you will stuck in the crowd, it is always crowded anyways. I went on a rainy afternoon, still it was crowded, tourists everywhere. It was hard to shop or even walk, the floor was wet and slippery. We walked half way in and returned because it was too uncomfortable to walk in the rain. The... More

A spitting image of what you'd see in Spirited away with red lanterns dotting the old street. With arrays of delicacies and trinkets to buy, it's easy to get lost in the maze. Avoid this place during the monsoon season, terribly hard to get in and out by bus

Lovely place where lanterns can be released into the air. The lanterns we used had no metal pieces and were made from paper and bamboo so were likely more environmentally friendly than your regular lanterns.

Place was very crowded. Almost impossible to walk. Not a place to take baby prams. The shops selling food was very crowded and you would need to wait a while for a seat

My teenage children cant stop talking about it. The narrow streets. the tight walk along the alley. and the street food you will only find in Jiufen . Anytime,we will go back even for just the experience.
