There aren't many mountain railways in the world, and much fewer in Asia, which makes this a desirable travel option if you're traveling in the region. In order to even arrive at Alishan (which means, "A-Li mountain"), most tourists nowadays take the 1+hour bus ride up, but the Alishan Forest Railway is truly the most beautiful way to ascend this... The train ride is one of the few option routes to get to Alishan. Take a scenic slow train ride up. However, due the typhoon, the train only gets you to Fenchihu station. To get to Alishan, you need to take a bus, or grab a cab from Fenchihu. Train ride from Chiayi to Fenchihu is estimated to be two... More

This small city / train (traditional, non HSR) station is the transport hub for travelling into Alishan Forest and the Yushan National Park. One can take the bus service running 10 times daily uphill, or the Alishan Forest Railway's narrow gauge train ending at Fenqihu running once or twice daily. In fact, if one travels into this city by high... More

Lots of old train cars to see, not a whole lot of info. Good place to stop for half an hour, kids would enjoy greatly.

We stayed one night in Chiayi so that we can take the famous Alishan train from Chiayi to midway of Alishan. When we arrived, we found the ticket counter closed and there is only one train at 9am for weekday, Disappointment.

Would have given chiayi train cum bus stations 5 stars if not because of the constant harassment from the old ladies who really followed you to the ticketing queue trying too hard to convince people to car pool in their taxis. The staff at the counters were professional and knowledge. After hearing our itinerary plan, they further advised us on... More

Smaller of the HSR stations in Taiwan. MOS Burger is under construction leaving only Family Mart and Starbucks. Many rental car booths. Typically not very busy and easy to get in and out of.

This is the gateway to Fenchihu as the end station but it is quite worth the trip. Although you can get there faster by public bus, but it is a nicer feel to go by train. It will be a 2 hour train ride up to Fenchihu and those with motion sickness; I would recommend taking some pills as there... More
