I was in the area for four days. It was so enjoyable did this ride twice. This was recommended by the front desk clerk of my hotel as a way to get back to the area after doing the Tail of the Dragon. I am...More

This drive is so beautiful. It is intense enough to have fun and beautiful enough to enjoy the ride. The NC has been recently resurfaced and it is so nice and smooth. The TN side I was actually embarrassed by. Still a beautiful drive, tons...More

Lots of scenic pull-offs. Plenty of long steep up/down grades. Some turns but nothing like the Dragon. Highest point is 5,000 feet above sea level. If it's rainy, you'll be driving in the clouds.

Enjoy multiple photo opportunities and some trailheads for hiking. Travelled from NC to TN on the Skyway. Rainbow Falls along with Bald River Falls were worth the drive alone. Experienced a little off road past Bald River Falls.

This is presented as a drive in the clouds and they are not far off the mark. What a beautiful drive! You can start in Tennessee and end in North Carolina, or start in North Carolina and end in Tennessee. It is hard not to...More

We rode up for the day on our motorcycles and it was a full but easy trip from Atlanta. It's a beautiful ride/drive on the skyway with plenty of areas to pull over. My best advice? Skip lunch at a restaurant and take a picnic....More

Planned and built as a "Scenic Byway" which first opened in 1996, the Cherohala Skyway connects the Cherokee and Nantahala National Forests. Popular with motor cyclists and sports car enthusiasts (we were in our M-3), with lots of great views and very little evidence of...More

The Cherohala Skyway is one of the least appreciated gorgeous drives near the Great Smoky Mountains. My wife and I were there last Saturday afternoon, and in 40 miles, I bet we did not see 20 cars. You have beautiful views looking out over Tennessee,...More

Sooooo glad we chose to ride the entire Cherohala Skyway across the tops of the Unicoi Mountains connecting NC/TN. Beautiful vistas, plenty of photo/picnic stopoffs along the route. We were fortunate enough to have a crystal clear 65 degree day, but with some fresh snow...More

Just a drive though this route is a great experience. If you have time, stop along the way for a picnic. Also the Joyce Kilmer virgin forest is a notable way station and worth the slight detour.

There's lots of places to stay, finding beer is a lot harder to find, I would bring my own.

The question is wide open. How much time do you have? What do you want to see? How many miles a day do you want to ride? There are so many great roads in the region, it depends on what you want to do. There are several websites that have information on the region. I ride from Illinois to the "Tail of the Dragon" area once a year. I find something new every time. I'm 57 years young and find the entire area fantastic. On every trip, besides the computer preplan, I carry two sets of maps. Butler and America Rides Maps. Butler is by far one of the best maps for motorcyclist. In the region you are asking about, America Rides Maps has a group of maps that covers the region. No best route, until you know the mission. ENJOY! While in the Cherokee area if you have time, stop at Wheels Through Time Museum.
