About
Tanjung Tualang Tin Dredge No.5 or TT5, the last tin dredge in Malaysia. Tin rush in Perak began from 1848 in Taiping. Perak became the wealthiest state in Malaya. Its capital Ipoh was fondly known to many as “The City of Millionaires”. In January 1913, Malayan Tin Dredging (MTD) introduced the first dredge in Batu Gajah. Due to declined tin price, operations started to shut down and ‘floating factories’ were dismantled or sold off. Today, there is only one remaining tin dredge known as TT5. It was built in England by F.W. Payne & Sons in 1938, upgraded in 1963 and had continued its operation for 44 years until August 1982. Located about 40-minute drive from Ipoh, TT5 is now fully open for visitors to experience TT5 Guided Dredge Tour, panning and self tour inside the gallery and the magnificent view of the landscape. TT5 has been proclaimed as part of the Kinta Valley National Geopark since October 2018, hence a ‘must visit’ tin mining heritage site in Malaysia.

An interesting piece of history. The tin dredge is huge and has many sections to see. The guided tour was interesting and revealing. A piece of 20th century history built in England but assembled and situated in Malaysia. Our guide Mr Saravanam was brilliant. Although you can just walk the outside, you really need the tour of the inside of the dredger.

Its a massive block of metal with a weight of 4500 tons. It was indeed a machinery genius for tin dredging which can dredge to a depth of 33 metres . Its also very stable and do not feels any rolling in the water. Visiting the dredge would give you a first hand how tin ore was done in the 30's in Malaya. It was indeed a memory lane of almost 100 years ago.
The is a park beside the pond too. The entrance fees of RM18 is a bit pricey for the guided tour of the dredge. Nevertheless I would recommend to visit the only remaining full fledge tin mining dredge in the world.

Amazing Trip and glad to see TT5. TT5 have done a awesome job, 24/7 continuously 44 years, finally retired at Tanjung Tualang.

I would like to give a big thanks to my tour guide Amir, he is very knowledgeable, explained in very details. We also get to know there's a bigger Tin Dredge at Dengkil. Hope it will open for visit 1 day.
