Description:

The Latin inscription over the main door of this church and convent...

The Latin inscription over the main door of this church and convent dedicated to St. Francis reads: non est in toto sanctior orbe locus (there is no holier place on earth). As it's now a museum and concert hall, it may no longer be earth's holiest place, but it certainly is one of the loveliest. Built in the 16th century, in 1730 it was restored in a baroque style, resulting in a richly adorned facade with fluted conchlike tympanums over the doors and windows. Just inside the door you'll see tombs beneath a glass floor panel. (Churches were used as cemeteries until Bishop Espada founded what is now the Necrópolis Cristóbal Colón in 1868, a detail all Cubans seem to know and cherish). Note also the 19th-century grandfather clock made by Tiffany. The rooms to the right of the nave house archaeological finds and art exhibits.

Having visited numerous churches around the world and seen almost every bodily part known to man preserved by some means I was rather looking forward to this one. Sadly the 'pickled monk' is a little disappointing. The rest of the church is rather loverly and the climb to the top worthwhile.

This church is beautiful. It's right downtown and an easy place to add to your walking tour of Havana.

We read about concerts/music here and really wanted to go. The guide books said you need to go to see what the schedule is and to get tickets. We arrived Saturday. It is open Tuesday to Saturday I think. When we went Tuesday we could not get tickets for that night and we leaving the next day. It would be... More

This Church is on the edge of Old Havana. It is now used primarily as a concert hall. The dome was destroyed long ago in a hurricane and a wall was erected to close off the old area. The wall has been painted with a trompe d'oeil mural which synthesizes the missing dome. Very interesting!

Nowadays a cultural center, this franciscan convent is well kept and you can listen there young Cubans rehearsing for their future classical music performancves. The garden nearby (named Mother Teresa) is very nice (as well as the plaza outside).

After we'd all checked in to our casa, we took a taxi down to Old Havana and learned very quickly that pedestrians do not have the right of way and that 57' Chevy's will run you down if you don't move your body! But we were dropped off at an old Greek Orthodox Church, Convent of St. Francis, which hosts... More

explore the entire church, walk, digest the richness of how it was built and all that has inside. If you have time, as if there is a concert at night, i promise it wont disappoint.

We didn't go inside the church. What a peaceful, cool sanctuary in the middle of a busy plaza, which is right across the street from the Port. We walked among the ancient trees and admired the sculptures of Mother Theresa and La Mesa del Silencio, among others. Also in the garden, there is a large mural of The Resurrection.
