The Cable Car Puerto Plata is located on the Mountain "Isabel de Torres", south of the beautiful city of Puerto Plata. At the top of the mountain, above a fortress is the statue of "Christ the Redeemer" with open arms gives the welcome to visitors. During the visit you will enjoy wonderful views of the ocean and city, as well as beautiful gardens, since the mountain has been declared a Scientific Reserve for the wide variety of animal and plant species that are found in it. And if you keep your eyes peeled, you can discover hidden caves that lead to springs and streams that flow into the mountain! - mark_globetrotter28109 contributionsAmazing experienceAs a DIY shore excursion (we were on a cruise), we took a private taxi from the Taino Bay cruise terminal in Puerto Plata to take us to the Teleferico cable car. The taxi ride was quite pricey at USD 60 return for a short distance to the cable car station. That rate is good for up to 5 pax (& we were 4). The cable car ticket costs very reasonable at USD 10 per person (return) however the queue was very long we had to wait for about an hour to get on. I later on learned from the taxi driver on our way back to the cruise port that there were 4 cruise ships currently docked at that time hence the influx of fellow tourists. There were only 2 cable cars running up & down, 1 in each direction. Each car could take up to a dozen pax I think. The ride both up and down were simply breathtaking. You can view the lush forest down, the ocean from a distance and the Isabel de Torres Hill, the destination of the cable car. Once up in the mountain, we took great photos with the replica of Rio de Janeiro’s Christ the Redeemer statue. Truly instagrammable! There’s also a hiking trail. We were blessed with a great weather, sunny and clear skies (it was 23Dec). I highly recommend this place!Visited December 2022Travelled with familyWritten 16 January 2023
- Nancy OmundsenNanuet, New York7 contributionsBeautiful Views!I went to Puerto Plata with my family and the Teleférico excursion was by far one of our favorite. My kids loved it. I have an adult child, A teen, and a young child and they all enjoyed it so much. We enjoyed the view, the Cristo and the nature that flowed through the forest on that base which the statue of Cristo stands today. The ride up to the base was peaceful, Breathtaking and truly remarkable. There was also a very friendly vendor right outside the Cristo Statue that sold Pastelitos, waters, sweets, ice cream and anything small you can be craving and she offered affordable prices. Only thing I recommend is wearing sneakers that are forest (non-slip) friendly and be prepared for vendors inside the market by the Cristo to ask you to go inside and shop at their stores. Very beautiful and memorable for myself and my family.Visited November 2022Travelled with familyWritten 8 February 2023
- John SBuffalo, New York734 contributionsView from AboveFebruary 16, 2023 we arrived in port with our cruise ship. The newly built seaport was beautiful. Popular excursion get their early We decided to walk to the tram. It was interesting, high traffic and very noisy. Perhaps not recommended for future travelers to walk. We got there paid $10/ per person waited about 20 minutes. They had some seating and music as you wait. It takes about 8 minutes to get to the top. The top has a great sculpture of Christ similar to the statue in Brazil. An aggressive gift shop. Great trails along the top in their botanical gardens. On our way die we had a cloud inversion everything was white. We we not as adventurous walking back, We got a taxi. Cost us about $25 to go back to town. They will walk with you sometimes showing you different shops and sites This would be the exclusion to do. You can always walk the town yourself. A lot of security staff wall around. Church Chocolates Cigar rolling Pink street And of course umbrella street.Visited February 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 February 2023
- Joseph GMontreal, Canada5,004 contributionsA must doLast year when I was vacationing in the Puerto Plata region the cable car was closed for repairs. This year I was able to return to the region and in include it in a private city tour. The round-trip ride to Mount Isabel de Torres costs $10 US for non-Dominican residents. Up on the mountain you have stunning views of Puerto Plata, a statue of Christ the Redeemer, an extensive park as well as a restaurant. We did not tour the park but hope to do so in a return visit. I suggest that you take the ride up on a warm sunny day. There is ample free parking if you arrive at the cable car departure station by car.Visited February 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 February 2023
- DianaMagicMooseMarietta, Georgia20 contributionsLong Views and FlowersAmazing views and plenty of flowers to spend the whole day viewing. After purchasing my tickets to ride the tram a guide came up to me and tried to convince me to hire him to show me everything at the top for $35. You do not need a guide. They have maps and signage is good. The trails are a bit rough in places. Steep inclines with no rails and broken rocks. But don't let that stop you. Put on your hiking boots and take a beautiful walk thru the Jungle!Visited May 2023Written 16 May 2023
- wevisitplaces38 contributionsVery cool experienceThis is a really cool experience. You get to ride a cable car up the mountain, and there is really a lot to do at the top. There’s a cave, gardens, restaurant, statue, old time house, etc. it’s a lot of walking on top and plan to spend at least an hour up there. We had a great time and highly recommend.Visited May 2023Travelled with familyWritten 29 May 2023
- Andrés BlancoCarteret, New Jersey675 contributionsViews that never get old!The last time I visited this place was like 8 years ago and I can tell that there are improvements to make your experience a better one. Now they have more staff to help you find your way around and answer any questions you may have. The facilities felt cleaner and better organized. The views from the top of the mountain never get old! Up there you can walk through many trails, admire the beautiful vegetation and take nice pictures of the wonderful view of the city of Puerto Plata. There's a gift shop and a small snack bar where you can sit, eat and drink. Prices are good for a tourist place. I would recommend taking a sweater before going up there. Temperatures may drop drastically at any time of the day.Visited June 2023Written 29 June 2023
- Diana A5 contributionsAwesome tourThis place is beautiful, ride is terrifying and scary but worth it a warning sometimes power goes out and they have to switch to generators so car stopped and it turned a little we all freaked out and screamed whishing someone told us in advance. Once up there the views and forest, the flowers are awesome. Wear comfortable and non-slippery shoes because it is very humid.Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 16 August 2023
- Cliff C2 contributionsAmazing HikeWe initially did not think much of the hike and did not believe we needed a guide, however, quickly realized how grateful I was that we ended up going with one, Domingo. He charged $100 which I initially thought was a bit much but actually ended up tipping him over twice that. He was fantastic 10/10, the hike was beautiful, albeit strenuous, took us about three hours, and had some very steep/overgrown sections. We did come across some beautiful avocados, ?guava?, wildlife, and a wonderfully satisfying arrival at the top. The view was beautiful, the vendors were persistent as they all are in the DR ahah, and the view coming down by the cable car was gorgeous. Best part of my vacation.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 September 2023
- Sandy A2 contributionsThe Teleferico ExperienceMust see when you visit Puerto Plata! Its USD10 per person to ride the cable car that takes you 2600 ft above sea level, at the peak of Isabel de Torres Mountain. You get to see a breathtaking view of the Atlantic Ocean, the shorelines and the cityscape of Puerto Plata. On top of the mountain sits a smaller version of the Christ the Redeemer statue similar to one in Brazil. Im bad for forgetting names but there’s a guy there who owns a souvenir shop up there. He would volunteer to take ypur pics for free and his only request is for you to buy from his gift shop. He takes amazing pics its all worth it. Go to his shop after and buy a piece or two. Quick tip: make sure you know the prices of common souvenirs sold in local shops before you go there, so you know how to make bargain. For example, a bottle of Mama Juana medicinal herbs is only $12 but maybe sold for $30 up there. So if you buy it for $15 from this guy, just think that it already includes his tip for taking your beautiful pics. FYI, Teleferico is handicap accessible.Visited September 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 25 September 2023

Despite my fear of heights, I enjoyed the ride up the cable car, it was such a beautiful view. Once on top of the mountain, it feels like a rain forest and has beautiful scenery, caves and a nature. We enjoyed our 2nd time here just as much as the first.

Felt like being on top of the world what a fantastic ride up into the clouds and looking down on the beauty of Funchal, plenty to see and do, there is a charge to go into the gardens and another cost for a different cable car

We visited the cable car as part of the city tour we purchased. The car ride up the mountain was cool, but the garden, the walk and the view from the top are the best part.

We will be on a Royal Caribbean cruise the second week in December and porting in Taino Bay. We plan to walk from the port into town to the historic district. Is the Cable Car entrance in walking distance from this port or will we need to take a taxi?
Andrés Blanco

Hello. I believe it’s a 25-30 minutes walk (one way). The Historic District is a safe place to walk around but I’m not sure outside this area so I’d advise to take a taxi because it will be safer.

Does a bus or a taxi take you to the top of the mountain or is the only way up the cable car??

We took the cable car up. There were people hiking up the side of the mountain too. There are taxis that can get to the top but the view of the city from the cable car is spectacular.

How do you find taxis and tour guides to hire to take you to this place from the cruise port?
Robert H

Betsy, we walked over to the cruise taxi stand and told the attendant that we needed a cab to take us to the cable car. Moments later, a cab pulled up and the attendant told us the cab would take us there and wait until we completed our tour and bring us back to the port for $40. It worked out well. The taxi stand is in the left corner of the port. Anyone can point you in the right direction if you can't find it otherwise.
