The city of Old San Juan was really a fortress surrounding a city, walled in and with few entrances. originally there were 5 doors or gates to enter the city, and the Puerta de San Juan was the main entrance and, as far as I know, the only surviving gate. The door is just that, an immense door leading from... More

The historic formal entrenched to old San Juan is a free, flat walkway around the old city wall. It offers scenic views of the wall and an alternative entrance to el Morro. Sections of the wall is currently being cleaned. Oh yeah and there is a lot of cats. Our count was 23.

There is nothing extra special about the Gate with the exception of the historical nature as an entrance to the city. It is kinda cool to enter through the gate to tour Old Town just like you would have entered centuries ago.

We walked the path that leads from the nearby fort to the San Juan Gate. The walkway is nicely kept and very scenic. I took many pictures. It is safe and many couples and families were enjoying the stroll. The water is beautiful to observe and there were plenty of lizards, birds and cats to see.

San Juan Gate is accessible walking on La Fortaleza street. The streets are in a grid so finding the gate should not be difficult if you head south on any of the interconnecting streets. The gate inside looks different than the outside which is typically shown in the pictures. This gate leads to Paseo de la Princesa (Walkway) which makes... More

If you are in San Juan, you will find so much history that you need a few days to tour. The gate, the fort, cobble stone roads, local crafts, free bus tours, local food, and interesting bars. Fun Fun Fun

Can you imagine walking through this gate after a lengthy travel on the sea. What a walking sight that would have been. I knew it was a lengthy walking from the city center, but well worth it.

When heading out of the San Juan National Site, this is the first major exit location along the walking track. Only minutes away from the hub of downtown San Juan, the gate offers a great insight into the history of San Juan.
