Very famous around the area. Not too much to do really. Gets packed during the festivals in January.

Trip Advisor! This is the National Gallery, located in the modernized and readapted Convento de Los Dominicos in Old San Juan. (Different from the Puerto Rico Museum of Art in Saucerre.) Very few people will look for it under 'Convento"! Near El Morro and San Cristobal--on the same street. Clean restrooms and Arctic air conditioning. I was the only person... More

Literally translated, "Convent of the Dominicans" is Galeria Nacional. No longer a convent, it is still a magnificent ancient structure that houses a museum featuring Spanish Colonial art. Locals informed me of their perception of the modernization of the building, much as they are with the structure that houses Las Américas Museum a block west. Despite---or possibly because of---Arctic air... More

If you have limited time, go here instead of San Juan Cathedral. This is a lovely, small museum where you will see a good representation of Puerto Rican art from Spanish Colonial days through the 50s and 60s. The gallery rooms are off the main courtyard and you will be escorted by guards who will let you in each gallery.... More

by ongoing "improvements". The original convent furnishings were pillaged over the series of redoings due to constant change of ownership. The rooms are still good, and you can sort of tell how it used to be. If you didn't know better, you might think it was great. It does have the best public bathrooms in the area.

This a beautiful landmark and is often used to house art exhibitions and cultural events. It is often open to the public to visit as a museum. It is a great example of the architecture during the Spanish rule as well as the Hotel El Convento.

This under-visited museum, the Galeria Nacional, is located in the old Dominican Convent. The collection covers artists from the 17th century to the present and is excellently curated. I cannot encourage people strongly enough to put this on their visit. A window into the depth of Puerto Rican culture - and it's "right sized." Enough paintings that you feel you've... More

The Puerto Rican National Gallery is situated in the old Dominican Convent. The collection which is displayed over a series of rooms provides a great introduction to the arts of this country and to the premier artists and periods. Some beautiful surprises. I especially enjoyed being able to see the Gallery's collection of antique santos - made purchasing a contemporary... More
