We stopped at the Brimstone Hill Fortress as part of an island tour of St. Kitts. The fortress was the highlight of the tour. Brimstone Hill is very well preserved. We had fun wandering around the property and seeing the exhibits that depicted life hundreds...More

This place takes you back to the 1600's. Built by African slaves for French troops. It was neglected till the mid 60's, when it became a World Heritage Site. The restoration was wisely done. The workmanship and lasting strength of the structure are amazing. The...More

We live on Nevis, but still make a visit to Brimstone Hill Fortress on every visit to St Kitts. They are continuously updating the exhibit rooms. They staff is friendly and the drive from Basseterre is nice. Don't miss the gift shop!

This is a must see for about $8 each, and an audio tour is available at an extra cost. If you drive yourself the entrance is steep and narrow but well worth it. The views are fantastic in all directions especially from the very top...More

Wow. I've seen old Spanish forts and buildings from Cartagena to San Juan. This one ranks right up with the very best. Truly inspiring. Words can not do this place justice. Take a look at the photos if you want to but just go. You...More

High atop the fortress what view can compare? There is so much to see here. Ruins of what once was the island's defense; preserved for us today. Stellar views in every direction. Plan on spending some time here and make sure to go to the...More

We jumped on a local bus from the port and were deposited at the bottom of the hill ready for our walk up. Along the quiet road uphill we saw lots of local wild life including monkeys that we wouldn't have seen if we had...More

I'm not sure where the bus stop is as we rented scooters, but if the stop is at the main road it is a long and very steep road. Also, even if you are dropped off where you pay it is still an effort to get to the top. If... More

Is it difficult getting a taxi from the cruise port to Brimstone? Hoping to head there before before going to a beach for the rest of our day on St. Kitts.

What is the best way to visit the fortress without having to purchase a whole tour? I would like to be able to explore it at my leisure and not be confined to a tour. We will be coming by cruise ship for the day. Would taxi be the only way, if so does anyone know what that would run from the port?

taking a local bus is an option, though it is quite a hike from the bus stop up to the fortress. but if you're on a tight budget it can be done.
