slightly unsure when we bought out tickets, but this castle is amazing, you really felt how it might have been in days gone by, quite spooky really reading all the boards about how life would have been then, walking round the moat and taking in how vast this castle was, fantastic views, didn't want to miss a thing.

Really love visiting this castle, we first went there in December 2005 when my now husband proposed at the top of the tower. We have been back many times and I always enjoy spending time in this ancient building. Imagining the lives of those who lived there. The towers, moat, courtyards and views evoke such an atmosphere. This weekend we... More

Not a car friendly entrance or exit but well worth the effort to visit. Some nice touches in the additions to relate the castle story. Worth the effort of climing to the top for a great view.

This castle is a good size and has plenty to explore. Much of it still stands to a good height and you can climb to the top of one of the towers for a scenic view. What makes it unique is the variety and clustering of towers, ornamental moats, bridge and passages. It's a wonderful place to take your time... More

There's a lot more to see here than your typical castle, a maze of different rooms and connected buildings. Beautiful views too, well worth a look. The castle cafe at the farmhouse is really good too and the staff are really friendly there.

Not as old as other nearby castle ruins, having been started only in 1435, but spectacular nonetheless. There is much to see and admire here - stunning views of the countryside from the tower, wonderful carvings, a gorgeous oriel window in the great hall, fireplaces and ovens in the kitchen and the recently restored grand staircase. Model of a dragon... More

Not the oldest castle in the region, but certainly the most stylish. The Herberts and the Somersets went to some lengths to provide them selves with a luxurious, fortified home, which is evident as you tour the extensive ruins. The resulting castle was what historian Anthony Emery has described as one of the "last formidable displays of medieval defensive architecture"... More

This is a definite must see castle for anyone who is remotely interested in the subject. Just go!! Combine with castel coch, tintern abbey and even caerphilly castle for a very castley / ruiny - holiday. My review is uncritical as I am clearly biased. I love it and will go back again within a heartbeat if I am anywhere... More

Beautifully illustrated by boards detailing aspects and history of the castle both before, during and after England's civil war. It would be of particular interest to children and adults alike and is a 'must' to visit and explore.

We had never been before so we decided to call. I was happy with the £6 entry fee, it was a lovely Castle and very surprising to find a Dragon there. It was a lovely place to walk around and it had a moat!
