The views will leave you breathless. We sat at the top completely grateful for being able to take in such beauty. Absolutely a must see.
Pro tip: if you have a car and IF IT IS LOW TIDE take the dirt road on the left side of the main road from the parking lot. That should take you to a (mostly) cleared area near some mangroves and you can access a gorgeous sandbar at low tide.

The new road up to the monument is glorious. They did such a good job with it. There are lots of great views from the top. They are all different based on which direction you're facing. I had read that there were coves down below where you could snorkel, but when we were there the water in every direction was way too rough for swimming or snorkeling. I'd love to find out where we can do this next time though. There were some great photo ops here. Just be careful if you have kids with you because you wouldn't want them getting close to the edges.

Wow! I wanted to see the area where Christopher Columbus landed on Long Island, which was awesome. I was not expecting the beautiful hike up the small hill (with new concrete stairs). The view was spectacular! Also the road off of the Queens Highway to get to the monument is one of the widest and best on the island. Worth the drive!

The journey to the monument was challenging since we decided to take bikes on the 3 mile trip from our resort. The road to the monument is being redone so right now it is full of holes and rocks. When you get closer it changes to sand which adds another challenge to riding a bike. Then when you get to where you can't ride anymore it's a steep climb up to the monument itself. But when you reach the top you are greeted with an amazing view. Quick note here: the monument itself is in slight disrepair. The concrete is crumbing in spots and there is rust on the top of the monument itself. But the plaque is made of marble so it's in great shape. The draw here is the view. It's amazing. And to top it off there is a gorgeous cove right next to the monument that you HAVE to see. You can thank me later.

So the key points:
If you can, take a 4x4 to get there.
The road is being worked on and will be great once finished.
The views are amazing.
Monument needs upkeep.
Hidden cove is stunning.

This spot is worth the trek. Climb to the top to see the Columbus Monument and some fantastic views of the sea north of Long Island. There is great snorkeling here, too. An amazing combination of hard and soft corals. Protected areas are nature's nursery and fun to explore.

FANTASTIC new road leading up to Columbus Monument! Smooth and very wide. New concrete stairway to monument finished with Teak or Cypress hand railings and posts. 1st class job. My wife and I traveled here by rental car from Cape Santa Maria Resort where we were staying. You could have easily ridden bikes to the monument parking area.

The road getting here is rough and one hundred per cent worth the trip. The views from the point, to the open ocean on the North, and Columbus Bay on the South are spectacular. A good day can be had exploring the bay on foot, swimming with the tides, and finding sea creatures.

This is one of our favorite snorkel spots on the island. The area is protected by some large uninhabited cays so the water is usually calm. The drive to the monument can be tough so just go slowly. The hike to the top of the hill is worth it for the views. Be careful along the ledge as the limestone can easily crumble. It is best to snorkel here at high tide. Please be sure not to touch any of the coral or damage it with your fins. The coral took a bit of a beating with the last 2 hurricanes. There are a lot of nice varieties of fish here including a very large barracuda! The water can get very swift in the “cuts” so be cautious. We would love to explore the area more by boat next time.
