I visited Long Island Bahamas for a family reunion and one of our family activities included a tour with 4K’s Adventure Tours and Rentals.
This was to be to be an island-wide tour from the southern most tip at Gordon’s Beach, to the Northern most tip at the Christopher Columbus Monument. I’m talking all 80+ miles of the island. Needless to say this would be a day-long adventure.
The Big Yellow School bus arrived promptly at 8:45am and we all boarded and found our seats. The first thing we noticed was that the AC was not on. We mentioned this to the tour guide who assured us that the air conditioning unit was in fact working and that the bus would cool off soon. (Please keep in mind that on this day the temperature outside was 90 degrees.) More about that later.
We were then introduced to the driver, Vernal, and our tour guide (along with his daughter who came along for the ride). In total we were about 35+ persons on board. We departed at 9:00am
Some of the highlights of the tour included Gordon’s Beach, Dean’s Blue Hole (where they were taping an international diving competition: Vertical Blue 2023), the Long Island Museum, Letta’s bar (for a quick bite to eat), the site of the Long Island Regatta, Adderly Boys conch stand (for conch salad a local delicacy), and culminating with the climb up to the Columbus Monument.
The tour ended around 5pm and it was a full day of sightseeing and learning about some of Long Island’s history. The tour would have been good if not for the inoperable air conditioning unit.
Remember earlier when I said that on this day the temperature was 90 degrees? And remember when the tour guide assured us that it would “cool off” soon? And remember when I mentioned that we were 35+ persons on board? Well the air conditioner on the bus NEVER functioned.
The temperature on the bus never cooled and the air conditioner blew nothing but hot air. For 6+ hours we suffered in the sweltering heat of the metal bus. We tried using our own portable fans to cool off but that didn’t work either. It was just too hot outside.
Maybe this was a “one off” however the heat distracted us from thoroughly enjoying the tour. Had the Air conditioner been working the tour would have been improved immensely.
