My family and I visited the Long Island Museum in Buckley’s Long Island Bahamas on Friday July 28th, 2023 and honestly didn’t know what to expect. The museum is very small (and not open on the weekends) but it has a thorough collection of artifacts and if you listen closely to the tour guide you can actually learn a lot about the people who live on this beautiful island.
We were a group of 8 that visited the museum. Cost of entry was $1 so there is no excuse…visit the museum and support the island economy.
Sheena Cartwright, museum attendant, was our tour guide and took us back in time through Long Island history. We learned about the “homestead” and the tools and artifacts that Long Islanders used to use.
We learned about Long Island straw braiding/plaiting, and saw replicas of historical discoveries from Long Island. The kids learned about the toys kids played with back in the days, and learned about making Junkanoo costumes and learned about the discovery and preservation of former skate plantations.
They don’t allow phots in the museum but we were able to snap outside. The museum tour ends with a small gift shop where you can buy authentic Bahamian goods.

As a Bahamian with Long Island roots, this was an awesome and educational experience. I learnt the history and culture of Long Island and The Bahamas. It was fun to recognize certain artifacts from spending time in Long Island or with grandparents in my childhood. This is a must visit when visiting Long Island.

This is a must do on your tour of the island. The museum is right off the main highway in Buckleys. The exhibits are very cool and there's a well-stocked gift shop. The nice young lady who works there even gave us a great land crab recipe! You can also pick up a copy of the Bahamian Calendar who's original publishers are from Long Island. It has interesting facts, recipes and beautiful artwork! We get one every year. Entrance fee is $3. Hours are M-F 8a - 4p and Saturdays 8a - 1p. Don't miss it!

We stopped here on our way down the island. It is very quaint and informative. The building is lovely. The lady watching the museum was very gracious and appreciative of the donations. It has a nice little gift area. I wish I had purchased more Christmas ornaments there. They were very reasonable and there are not many shops on the island.

I've been dying to go this museum but heads up that it's currently closed to the public.
I was there early June 2017 and spoke to an employee who said the building still has damages from Hurricane Joaquin and it's been closed since. (There's a sign posted, but since the hurricane was so long ago I didn't believe it and knocked on the door anyway).

A must visit on the island, the women that work here are very knowledgeable about the islands history and more that willing to answer any of your crazy questions.

I'm so glad that the museum has reopened after the hurricane. The admission price was very inexpensive. They did a really nice job with it, though it was a bit small. I don't know how much was lost or damaged during the storm though. What they did have was really interesting and left me wanting to know more. I am hoping that with time and more donations they will be able to accumulate additional artifacts. It really is beautifully done.

Small Island Museum packed with information & history. I spent 3.5 hours there reading everything. I would go back. Very, very interesting! Picture taking not allowed.

Visited with a group of twenty (20) persons, kids and adults and was blown away with so much history and information of the Island. I was happy and sad at the same time, happy for the knowledge I gain and sad that I had to go leaving such kind and informative ladies... when you think you know, just visit the Long Island Museum.
Great Job Guys! Wow!

Visited the museum and was able to see many pieces of island art, from paintings to hand crafted straw designs. A great way to see the culture and experience the essence of the native people.
