Thankfully, some of the old Haveli's are being restored. We stayed in the Indra Vilas for just one night (see hotel review). Very quiet,old village. Our guide, Sandeep was only too pleased to show us as much as he possibly could and had no problem...More

Hand painted houses? No... huge palace- like homes where the rich merchants of bygone times lived. Multi level and at times as large as a city block. In Churu most Havelis I saw were closed, boarded up and left to decay. But the facade paintings...More

I'm amazed at the intricate designs and the choice of colours. I wonder what they used back then to make art come to life.

I do not understand why neither the Rajasthan government nor the haveli owners are paying attention to these fresco - painted havelis. The frescoes are lifelike & still well - preserved. A few of the havelis are still nice but most of them are crumbling....More

Churu has some of the most amazing painted hovels and free does in the Shekawati region. take time to explore them so that you are not killed by a sensory overload.

Found the havelies fascinating. From the outside just ordinary buildings, maybe in some cases some frescos but once inside they open out to present a picture of life many years ago. A hidden courtyard or two unseen from the road often with beautiful frescos one...More
