- Vicente8Singapore242 contributionsThis unforgettable hike has to be earnedMagnificent and unforgettable walk still open to the public. A few comments about trail 10 and its continuation trail 6: 1. Take trail 10 then trail 6. The views are more beautiful in this direction. If you hike in the other direction (6 then 10), you will have to climb the very difficult slippery clay path located after the plantation. 2. A start of trail 10 easy to find is located at the end of the Jalan Carnation 2 dead end in Tana Ratah. Arriving in front of the new house under construction, take the small unmarked path on the right which climbs steeply to the top of the hill. 3. The end of trail 6 leads to a small asphalt road. Take the road on the right to have the most beautiful views and cross the magnificent Bharat tea plantation. 4. It took us 4 hours of leisurely walking with breaks to drink, eat cakes, take photos and admire the scenery. 5. Hiking shoes recommended, even in dry weather. The trails are not well maintained. Around tree roots, soil erosion is dramatic. 6. In case of rain, the clayey terrain turns into a slippery quagmire. Find out if it has rained recently. 7. The trail is not marked at all. Download the Malaysia map on MAPS.me app to avoid missing the small junctions, especially at the trail 10/trail 6 junction and the entrance of the tea plantation. Enjoy your hike !Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 6 February 2024

No one stops and cares about pedestrians. So a negative but hardly worth mentioning everyone who has been to SE Asia knows this. But here in a small hii town wouldn't it be nice to have ways to cross safely? Walking the supposed trails, well they are not maintained or signposted well. I would be careful when choosing one to try. The most common one is the route to the tower on track 6. Easy to follow.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 May 2024

A well marked trail which is fairly moderate in difficulty. Can be quite easily done within an hour (each way). The start of the trail is walking distance from Tanah Rata town. The trail starts on a fairly gentle terrain but becomes moderately steep after 30 minutes and continues for another 20 minutes. The final 10 minutes is fairly flat. The peak is marked by a power transmission tower, located at the top of Gunung Jasar. It gives you a rewarding view of Cameron Highlands and the Tanah Rata town below.
It was quite an enjoyable hike and can be done with little to moderate levels of fitness.

Amazing hike. Did track 10 in combination with track 6. Started with a 30-45 minute climb to the top of the mountain. Then we went down via route 6. It didn't rain the day or night before and we went on a sunny day. But I can imagine if it is rainy it gets very muddy. In total it took us 3 hours from the beginning to the tea plantation where route 6 finishes. Then we took back a taxi to Tanah Rata. In the picture you can see where route 10 starts, it wasn't very clear online.

please use Sept 19 comment from budgetbucketlist for more detail if you plane to do the 10&6. It's a great hike! However, at the start, she mentions that the hike leaves from behind the weather station... I think she means the electrical substation! Save yourself the steep hill up to the weather station and take the road to the left. From thereon her directions are solid! (We actually started on 11, then linked to 10 pretty early on. Wonderful views - and, as you can imagine - the trails are empty (and somewhat overgrown!). Poles recommended. +/- 4 hours for a pair of lazy lockdown 40 somethings.

Hi there, I’m a full-time traveller that stayed twice in Cameron Highlands for several weeks. I walked every single trail here, and realized there’s an incredible amount of incorrect information and confusion out there. Times are incorrect, trail info incorrect (even on the signs), and people (incl. the local tourism office) seems to be unclear of trail names and which exist and which ones don’t.
So, I made it my goal to walk each and every one of them and made many notes. A full hiking guide including an entirely updated map (+ other info on transportation / accommodation / food / other activities / traveling the Cameron Highlands for FREE) can be found on the site that is my username + /cameron-highlands (links will get blocked here).
Here is the trail info for TRAIL 10:
Trail info: Trail 10 is the only trail allowing the climb of Gunung Jasar. It’s probably the most popular trail in the Cameron Highlands, because of the views.
Beginning & end: One end of the trail is just south of Tanah Rata… however, real estate is greatly expanding here, hiding the entrance. In 2011 I entered the trail via a forest, in 2019 I entered it after crossing a massive construction site (closer to the greenery you’ll find arrows and signs indicating the trail) … The other end is at the west side of Brinchang, right behind the weather station. It’s a bit hard to find, but once you approach this facility you’ll notice a beaten track on the right side of the gate, which you can simply follow. Behind the weather station Trail 10 starts when going straight up… if you walk via the left side, you’ll end up on Trail 11. There are ribbons indicating the route, and it can be found back on Maps.me.
Experience / Level of difficulty: This is, together with Trail 6 (with which it’s easily combined), my absolute favourite in the Cameron Highlands. No need to pay for the Mossy Forest tourist trap, as here you’ll find a fine stretch of free mossy forest. I walked it both ways in both sunny weather and mist, and I found that the mist added greatly to the mystique. On top of that, it’s one of the few trails with fantastic views, especially at the peak. Many passengers-by mentioned to me they found it quite intense, but in my opinion, it was one of the easier trails only requiring a basic level of fitness. However, it does indeed get steep at times.
Time: From Tanah Rata to peak: 36 minutes / From weather station to peak: 35 minutes; both measured walking up.

My better half and I hiked along this trail in Tanah Rata, Cameron Highlands a few days ago. If you are coming from Ringlet, look for the welcoming sign 'Selamat Datang ke Tanah Rata' made of white bricks on a slope. Turn left into O'ly Apartments. Then walk ahead towards Tan's Camelia Garden, walk through this private garden and look for a trail on your left after the green iron gate. Do spare some time to admire and appreciate the beauty of the flowers in the garden.
This trail (No. 10) is of moderate difficulty, not very steep or difficult and is doable for an averagely fit person. The trail is clear and as always, just follow the "main and clear" path and do not venture into the smaller side trails. After about half an hour, there is a sharp left turn. Although the trail is not well-marked, at the turns, there are strips of tapes or markings left by previous hikers to guide you.
After hiking for about 50 minutes, you will come to a clearing in the midst of tall grass, you will find a tall high-voltage electric tower. Most hikers will mistakenly think that this is the peak of the mountain. However, to reach the real peak, hike up the clearly seen exposed laterite slope and walk just another few metres in the forest and you will come to a small clearing with a concrete border stone indicating the states of Pahang and Perak, this is the peak of Gunung Jasar at 1696 metres above sea level. I understand there was a beirut up there but only the concrete base is left. You will be able to get a beautiful view of the town below from the peak.
This is a very recommendable trail for hikers and nature lovers who are visiting Cameron Highlands. The atmosphere is calm, cool and invigorating. It is doable without a guide but like hiking elsewhere, it would be better if you have a friend to accompany you. Do start your hike early as the sky can get dark very quickly in the late afternoon or when it starts to rain.
Lastly, a word of caution, do not proceed to the next mountain, Gunung Perdah, via a trail from the peak of Gunung Jasar, as the trail leading to that mountain has been destroyed by deforestation. In fact, it is very sad that the whole Gunung Perdah has 'disappeared' due to farming and housing developments since 2013. I am adding this for the benefits of visitors and hikers who may be referring to the older version of guidebooks. Happy Hiking!

We came here to walk and that’s what we did. We had a fantastic time.
Tanah Rata is the best place to base yourself for access to the jungle walks.
We bought a poor excuse for a map for RM3.50 called Cameron Highlands Discovery Map. It proved to be not to scale, inaccurate, none contoured and missing obvious landmarks in addition after the first days use it fell apart. It’s just a map selling advertising space. We have seen another map of a similar ilk that seems to have 16 walks but when you compare them the walk numbers do not match one another or the physical track signs. They do seem to be the only ones available to buy.
The walks are numbered on our purchased map 1-12 and they seemed to be in the general area shown on the map.
It is difficult to find the start and end of any of the walks due to neglect, extended agriculture and urban encroachment.
First tip is to locate the Cameronian Inn in Tanah Rata, take your camera with you and get permission to photograph the maps of the walks on display in the reception.
Second it to seek out anyone who has done any of the walks either guided or under their own steam.
Now for our experience of the numbered walks we completed shown on our map.
Walk 1 - Never got round to it.
Walk 2 - Very tough. Just don't know how they can fit in so many ups and downs into 0.95 of a kilometer! However it came at the end of the day after walking 3 and 8. The end came at the rear of the Sam Poh Temple in Brinchang.
Walk 3 - Tough and access gained from Walk 8 at the top of Gunung Berembun. An obvious land mark missing from our map is the large rain shelter at the junctions of Walks 3,5 and 6.
Walk 4 - Easy. We accessed it just beyond All Souls Church by going through double gates before the road crossed the river. 100 meters along the drive to the Forestry Centre and turn right through the picnic tables. Takes you back into the heart of Tanah Rata.
Walk 5 – Only did part of it when by the rain shelter but there was a young German woman sitting in the shelter with her year old baby and she had walked up Walk 5.
Walk 6 – Moderate. Did the top part of this walk from walk three to the rain shelter. However, a short way along Walk 4 we saw the start of Walk 6.
Walk 7 – We were told it was closed off so opted to walk 8,3,2 and 4 as a circuit.
Walk 8 – Tough. To access the Walk 8 from Tanah Rata go to the bus station and walk down Persiaran Dayang Endah passed the school and playing fields until you come to the junction signed to the Hospital or Robinson Falls. Follow the road to Robinson Falls and turn left over a bridge this puts you on Walk 9. Walk the Red and Green paving stones passed a small café and just before reaching Robinson Falls to the left rising up sharply you should see a standing stone indicating ‘Jungle Walk No 8. Distance 1.35 KM ‘. It took us just under two hours to reach the top.
Walk 9 and 9A. - Access from Tanah Rata as Walk 8 and continue passed Robinson Falls. Eventually Walk 9 runs out and to continue divert onto Walk 9A. Some kind hiker has put up two sets of warning signs the first to be alert to continuing in wet conditions and the second (if you make it that far) to divert you from the lost path through a farm onto a road running 5k up hill to the BOH Tea Plantation. It took us about 45 minutes to reach the Tea Factory. We returned back to Tanah Rata the way we came. Allow 3 hours each way for the walk including the trip to the plantation.
Walk 10 – Moderate. We located the trail head behind the Oly Appartments in Tanah Rata. The climb up took us to the top of Gunung Jasar which is above the electric pylon. To continue along Walk 10 from this peak you need to seek out the path to the right in the direction of your travel. Eventually we came off the walk just beside an Electrical Sub Station and rewarded ourselves with ice creams at the Healthy Strawberry Farm.

The trail does start behind Oly's Apartments - head towards Tan's gardens and you should find a little path, after a couple of minutes walk you should see the official yellow sign marking the beginning of the track. Keep walking uphill! Don't take track 11 - keep on 10 and you will eventually reach some electricity pylons - THIS IS NOT THE SUMMIT! We met a few people who turned round at this point thinking that was it. Keep going up - this means walking up and over the yellow sand/rock, you should see a path from there that takes you round to look out onto the other side of the mountain. There are two stone markers there to show you've definitely made it to the right place.
At this point, there's a little path almost opposite where you came up - this is now trail 12. This is the trail that leads you down, keep taking the left path at all times as path 11 joins it at one point. You can do a little detour to see the top of Perdah - takes two minutes.
To finish, you'll come out at a little village - follow the road down out the village and you'll be opposite the golf course.
Have fun! Try this website for info http://www.cameronhighlandsinfo.com/jungle_trekking/
There're a lot of warnings about the hiking but if you wear good gear, have hiked before and can trust your bearings, you'll be absolutely fine.

We did this hike on a pleasant day in August with no rain in the prior day and a half. We went up trail 10 and down trail six as had been recommended, and found the combination perfect. Trail 10 was easy to find with the Maps.me app or just looking behind the Camellia Garden per instructions. Currently trail 10 has plentiful markings with signs, white/red plastic construction tape, and yellow/silver ribbon all the way to the top. There is one active construction site just after the Camellia Garden but basically you just walk straight across and pick up the muddy trail with ribbon markings there. The maps.me app will make trail 10 easy to start but isn’t necessary to follow it. My wife and I are in good shape and it took us about an hour to get to the top at a casual pace. The feeling is of a densely wooded jungle trail, but without the high heat and humidity of Kuala tahan.
Trail six was a wonderful way to head back down, as you see completely different terrain including terraced farmed ravines, the tea plantations, and it drops you off in a good spot to pick up a taxi or hitchhike at the Cameron Valley Tea House. We found trail six to be far more picturesque than the classic BOH plantation visit. Of note is that trail six had no signs or markings on it whatsoever, and we followed it blindly based on the maps.me application which made it very straightforward for its entirety. It took us around two hours including a picnic lunch in the tea fields and a little slow moving up higher where the trail was a little more slippery and a little narrower. Also important to note is that trail six appears to be a new trail six, which is a completely different trail from the old Trail six which is marked on older trail maps and some online photos.

I never been cameron highland before can you please recommend some of the hotel to stay, place to go and how to go for the hiking trail? is that need a local tour guide?
is that all the attraction are nearby the hotel or must take transport?
Written 21 August 2018
Hi
It all boils down to whether you have your own transportation. If not, then you are better off staying in the town centre. But this is very congested and crowded. Which hiking trails you choose depends on your level of fitness and what you expect to do. We did trail no 10 and this required a moderate level of fitness. These trails are reviewed on trip advisor and I suggest you download maps.me which came in very handy when we were wondering which way to go. If it has been raining the trails get very slippery and in some places you are better off not going. We saw small patches of land washed away , so you have to ensure that it has not rained for 2 or 3 days before you start. I am not sure of the local transport although I did see a lot of tour operators in e town centre. We took a tour operator to mossy forest because we were told that the pathway was very narrow, we also took our vehicle to the tea estate and walked the way up to the peak of the hill. It is a great place to go in the evenings. You do not need a tour guide and can well do this on your own provided you have read up a lot and have maps.me. I suggest you go in a group for the trails so that you have some help at hand, because we saw very few people on our way. Hope this helps.

Is it possible to go for hiking on this trail next week?
Written 29 November 2017
Hi, Ana,
You DO NOT need a guide to hike along this trail. It is very clear and well-trodden. Just follow the main trail and do not proceed after you have reached the peak of Mt Jasar. Please refer to my review.
