I was able to visit the Tatacoa's Desert in Huila, Colombia with my boyfriend. The weather is friendly, if you enjoy the warm, because is not a desert. It's a dry tropical forest. I did not know that. It was the first surprise for me....More

This is a beautiful and tranquil place. The red desert looks like it belongs to another planet. Don't miss the star gazing at the observatorium.

Very interesting visit, day trip from Neiva would be ok if you don't want to stare stars or have a longer hike. Collectivos cost 7000 cop from Neiva and in Villavieja you can take mototaxi with waiting and returning for 30000 - 35000 cop. Negotiate!...More

I stopped in Villavieja mainly to break up the long bus ride from San Agustin to Bogota. Villavieja is a typical one-horse town with few options for eating etc but the locals are very helpful. One thing to note is that there are very limited...More

We were brought by two motorbikes to different trails along the road from Villavieja to the dessert. The trail at the campsite (Cusco?!) was amazing. The colours (red) of the landscape are amazing, the cactuses make the picture perfect. Although the "grey" part further on...More

This is an interesting place to visit. You can walk amongst the dunes and see the erosion. It is easy to get to from Villavieja. Just get a tuk tuk.

Definitely worth a visit while traveling through colombia. We took a motortaxi with a guide (Elver) who could tell us a lot about the region and the plants. I would recommend taking a guide because it's incredibly hot and easy to get lost. And bring...More

Hi There I am hoping to visit the desert and also get a chance to view the impressive star gazing opportunities, however i have some time restrictions. I need to leave Bogota for Villavieja Saturday evening but am able to take a nightnus to arrive at Villavieja as early as possible on Sunday. I then need to leave Villavieja to be able to get to Salento for Monday morning. So I would be willing to get to Neiva in the middle of the night Saturday/Sunday or leave very late Sunday, but I hear the minibuses between Neiva and Villavieja only run 5am-7pm. I also do not know how late in the morning stargazing is possible at this time of year. Does anyone with experience of the area know if I have any options? Thank you Will

Will, if you speak Spanish, I can dig up our guide's phone number. He lives in Villanueva and has been a guide for 35 years.
