After seeing the lake, I turned around and went back to my hostel. It's nothing spectacular. It's a lake. Not even that great of a lake. I'd skip it.

I think it is. I have done it a couple of times without any problem and felt save. Car rental in Mexico is generally heaper than in US. I usually rent from Avis or Dollar
