This is hands down the best museum in Oaxaca. The collection is extraordinary and the display exceptional. So what's not to like? The paucity of information. Here are all these fascinating, frequently beautiful artifacts without an iota of detail about source, related culture, use, meaning, or even careful dating (typical date: "preclassical period"). When I asked about this, I was... More

I think the prehispanic art here is beautifully displayed.Worth a visit. And the outdoor courtyard is captivating, too. But you have to see it to understand what I mean.

Stunning collection and artfully displayed. Five rooms of displays surrounding a lovely courtyard with a collection of sculptures by a well known Mexican artist. Don't miss this.

This small museum is a gem. The artist Rufino Tamayo collected the pre-hispanic art for himself and later to keep these remarkable treasures in Oaxaca. The wide range of emotional expression of the figures is eye-opening and very moving. Pieces are presented to highlight their aesthetic power, with some regions of art side by side, rather than segregated into areas... More

Pre- Columbian art collected by Mexican artist Rufino Tamayo and displayed purely for aesthetic, not historic, value. All regions of Mexico are represented. Some very memorable pieces!

I knew this was a supposed to be a high point of a visit to Oaxaca but had no idea of the depth and breadth of this amazing collection of pre-Columbian artifacts, displayed as art in a converted home near the center of the city. If you like Mexican indigenous art a visit to this museum is essential!

Tamayo set out to collect as much pre-Columbian art as he could to keep it from being carted off to the US or Europe. He then chose to display it as art - not simply as cultural artifacts. One of the best spots in Oaxaca.

Rufino Tamayo collected an amazing array of pre-columbian art. The building itself is of the colonial era and a perfect venue to display this vital and representative collection. It should not be missed.

Fabulous, innovative display of artifacts as art, often in groupings that tell a story. The quality of the work was marvelous, and the small scale of the museum made it manageable in an hour.
