We loved the idea of a woman artesians' collective, coming together to display and sell their art. We fully intended to make our main purchases here. However, the work did not seem to us to be of great quality, but more mass-produced highly-coloured affordable pieces. We did not find the beautiful pieces other reviewers write of.

Power to the mujeres! Profits go directly to the women who produce the art, craft, textiles, etc. It's a HUGE store with great representation of all things "Oaxaca." It's almost overwhelming, but delightful, a visual/sensory delight, & a great place for gifts, souvenirs, clothing, etc. Shop here for guilt-free experience: you're helping maintain Oaxacan crafts & women!

I bought a fantastic, large smoke-fired piece of earthenware studio pottery here at a great price that would be unthinkably cheap anywhere else. Not everything for sale here is as good value or high quality, but certainly worth a visit as prices seem reasonable throughout and they have a good selection of locally produced crafts and staff are friendly and... We stayed in Oaxaca for a month and did a lot of shopping in markets, in Teotitlan and in various stores. We kept coming back (and buying) at MARO. It is a cooperative of families that sell all of the major crafts in the Oaxaca area. We ended up buying two rugs there as well as two pieces of alebrije... More

There are several what might be called artisan's markets in Oaxaca. We went through perhaps five of them and lost interest in going to any others. They began to look alike or we had a touch of shopper's burnout. Prices were sometimes labeled and sometimes you had to ask. We found that if you bought a few items from one... More
