Lulworth Castle stands majestically in extensive parkland at the heart of the Lulworth Estate, close to Lulworth Cove. Built in 1608 as a hunting lodge to entertain royalty,it was purchased together with an estate of 20 square miles, by Humphrey Weld in 1641. Today the Estate still remains in the ownership of the Weld Family. All but destroyed by fire in 1929 the Castle exterior has been restored by English Heritage while the interior has been consolidated providing a magnificent open plan space. Within its displays and exhibits, cellars and memorabilia discover the fascinating story of its past.Climb the tower for spectacular panoramic views of the Purbeck countryside and towards the Jurassic Coast - an experience not to be missed. St Mary's Chapel, in the Castle grounds, is historically significant being the first stand-alone Roman Catholic place of worship to be built after the Reformation. Inside soak up the atmosphere and tranquility of this special place. Please note that jousting no longer takes place at Lulworth Castle.

Review of grounds only as we didn't pay to go in the castle. We paid £3 to park which gave us access to the grounds, toilets, picnic area, outdoor play area, tea room and shop. There were some outdoor games too which the children loved. A lovely spot.

The staff is very friendly and explains everything you want to know about the Castle and compounds. The history of the castle is very interesting and it was a beautiful family tree where you can understand what happened from generation to generation until today. It also has an Anglican Church and a Roman Catholic Chapel you can visit. It was... More

The highlight of our Dorset stay was to bring our daughter to the Easter event at Ludlow Castle. With puzzles and games galore spread across the breadth of the Estate, it was a wonderful immersive experience which transcended age. Climb to the top of the Castle for a 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside bordered by the sea. Excellent... More

This is a good attraction for families. The castle interiors can be explored and walks around the castle. There is a tower with a great view of Poole Harbour and Lulworth estate. St Andrews Church is a must for Thomas Hardy fans, my dad found it very informative and interesting. The staff are attentive and knowledgeable. The only downside is... More

We got in free as we are English heritage members, they had lots for children to do,things to find in grounds and castle, playground, lots of space to run around, and a tea room and picnic tables, also the catholic chapel was the first to be built after it was legal again after the reformation, better entry signage would be good... We enjoyed a family day out on Easter Monday. There was lots to do for the special Easter Alice in Wonderland themed weekend. My youngest daughter really enjoyed the activities and the little prizes she collected for completing them. The staff were very friendly and the area was very clean and welcoming. We enjoyed our day and thought the special... More

We visited on Good Friday and Lulworth Castle has a special Easter weekend. The relatively small cover charge (£25 for a family of five) gets you access to the historic castle, grounds and an Easter Egg hunt. The castle was badly damaged by a fire in 1929 but has slowly been restored. You now have a restored facade with a... More

Atmospheric fire damaged stately home, fully restored externally, but preserved rather than restored within. An interesting visit and the views from the one accessible tower are excellent. Signage to help you find the entrance is poor, although that in the castle itself good. Helpful and knowledgeable staff. Excellent little Tea room and the Cream Tea is recommended. NB Located between... More
