In the heart of Ireland, just over 1 hour from Dublin lies the town of Kilbeggan, home to the world's oldest distillery, established in 1757. It is the quintessential Irish whiskey distillery - whitewashed walls, weathered slate roof, brick chimney stack, creaking timber water wheel, even regular ghost sightings. This is no mere "visitor centre" but a real working distillery run by a team of young enthusiastic craftspeople (and a few wise old heads too), skilled in the traditional ways of making Irish whiskey. Open 7 days (except during Christmas and New Year). On-site Restaurant. Whiskey Bar. Gift Shop. Free parking.

Perhaps one of the best self-guided tours I've ever encountered, even herself, a non-whiskey enthusiast, enjoyed this historic point of interest. The waterwheel outside of the distillery, the old tubs and distillation vats, these items collectively granted us a nice soft day of inspired sightseeing. Tasting a drop of Kilbeggan at tour's end helped add to our holiday bliss. The... More

Lovely tour of this old distillery. Excellent guide called Deirdre, who really knew her stuff! Wait to visit until after the 17th March though as it is not operational at the moment. Would be difficult for anyone who is mobility restricted as there are steps to be climbed. Lovely restaurant on site. Ample parking too. The whiskey tasting at the... More

Kilbeggan Distillery is situated on the river Brosna in Kilbeggan Co Westmeath, we were on our way home from Galway and decided to come of the motorway to get something to eat when we seen a sign for this Distillery, the Distillery is the oldest in Ireland dating back to 1757 and it is a very interesting tour to take,... A spontaneous visit to a local attraction. Fantastic guided tour by Deirdre. It was amazing to see the inside of an old distillery exactly as it used to be, listening to the sound of the wheels and cogs moving from the power of the water mill. We had three different whisky tastings at the end and you definitely got your... More

We visited this distillery at the end of last summer. Great wee place with a good insight into how they made whisky back in the day. Good visitor centre and shop.

We were taken on a tour by a local man who has a very good knowledge of all types of whiskey. We started off with a massive breakfast inside the distillery. Dan still talks about that breakfast to this day. Toast butter side up. Our tour guide Tom explained the workings of the mill. We had a free sample at... More

As a self-proclaimed whisky geek I have been to many distilleries in the past - but this one was different. It was great to see a historic distillery that has been well maintained - it even has a working steam engine (although only fired up once a year) and water wheel. I'd recommend this to the first time distillery guest... More

This venue is well worth the visit, with a very informative tour on whiskey brewing, ending with a great tasting experience, as the drink is very smooth and comforting on a cold winters day. Also recommend the food and friendly service in their adjacent café.
