We haven't been to Colme Valley since our children were little, over twenty years ago and remembered it as an enjoyable experience. We took our granddaughter, aged four, this time. We enjoyed the miniature railway and Santa Claus was very good, spending alot of time with each child. We thought the quality of the gift was very poor, it was a teenage doll that you can get for a pound at a cheap shop, my granddaughter was very good but her face fell, I don't think she knew what to say. We bought her a sticker book from the shop to make up for it. We felt as though we were visiting a scrap yard, it certainly didn't make you want to return. I think next year we shall just go a local grotto rather than travel a long way, pay alot of money and come home feeling very disappointed

Thank you for your comments although I am not certain you are talking about the Colne Valley Railway at Castle Hedingham but another railway with a similar name, a common mistake. I can assure you that all of the presents our Santa gives out cost considerably more than £1 and I do not recognise this present from our supply list (but will be checking). Did you bring it up with his Elf or one of our staff as they could have changed it. Age restrictions can apply on some of the presents. We have taken considerable efforts to improve the appearance of our site over the last year, as it was a building site for a time, but not a scrapyard. I was looking around the station area yesterday and thinking how much better it was than a year ago and by Easter the last remaining building site area should be finished.

What a wonderful experience. Our grandchildren are only a year old but they loved the steam train. Santa was great and took time to sit with individual families and they received a lovely present - age appropriate. All of the voluntary staff obviously love their work, as the weather was freezing and they still were so friendly and welcoming. I can’t wait for next year...

Lovely friendly Santa special on train . We took our 3 children 10,6 and 14 who is severely disabled in wheelchair . We found all the staff so helpful and friendly. We went in the wheelchair friendly carriage, we we got onto by ramp . It was very spacious and all decorated. We were first to see Santa and he spent a lot of time talking to all 3 children and all received a nice gift , one for my eldest was suitable for his mental age and abilities which they pre prepared when I booked tickets over phone . It was a good amount of time on train , 30 mins . Which is just right for young children or those with disabilities I think . Obviously if the train station had a changing places it would have perfect but it’s a very old station so didn’t expect it . So prepared well . We got this Santa special as part of my sons Xmas gift as we prefer making memories for him than gifts and it didn’t let him or our Christmas family trip down .
