Totem Walk

Tons of totems to see and the walk is well documented with yellow steps painted on the sidewalks. Well worth a visit to the original downtown of Duncan.

The Duncan Totem Poles are a very well curated display of historic and current Cowichan First Nation history and culture. It is tucked away behind the cultural centre on the banks of the Cowichan River. It is a wonderful place to discover our First People's history.

Downtown Duncan is a pretty town with several interesting shops. It is worth turning off the highway and parking for a walk through the downtown and looking at the many totems. The downtown totems all have plaques explaining the symbolism.

If you are interested in learning about the heritage in this community and Native cultures in general, studying the Duncan totem poles is a very good start. Each of the totems have a plaque that explains what the carvings represent and the foot marker paths help ensure that you get to see all the totems.

I have to start with a preamble here: 1. Duncan is one of the best areas for shopping 2. There are quite a lot of totem poles The totem pole walk was great and easy to follow (painted footprints). The totem poles were great to see and each had a placard depicting the story behind the pole.

Duncan, BC bills itself as the totem pole city. Its true, they do have some totem poles but to bill itself as the totem pole city is a bit of a stretch. When I wandered the "downtown" area I saw maybe 8-10 poles. Unless you are a fanatic of totem poles, you are wasting your time stopping in this city.

Quite rightly knows as the city of Totem poles. A quick walk in the downtown area was quite interesting to see many Totems all in one place.

Rather boring if you have seen totem poles before. Although some of them have been cleaned up. Very popular and I'm sure very delightful for European and Asian tourists.

This was a fun thing to do for an hour. The tour is well created with a trail of yellow footprints which start at the museum. You could realistically pick up the loop anywhere. There are plenty of information panels and the totems themselves are fabulous in their variety. Well worth doing if you are staying in the area.

We stopped in Duncan to stretch our legs. Chose this place since it had the totem pole walk. We loved them and the stories behind them.
