I once walked all the way around this island with my grandma. If she could do it, so can you, or most of you anyway. It's a quick trip from Nanaimo and I remember swimming on the beach here just having a god fun adventure on many occasions.

We visited this island on a sailing flotilla on Easter Weekend, 2017 and it was beautiful. I highly recommend this as a destination for anyone cruising the local waters or even for a day trip if you can get over from Nanaimo.

I have walked on New Castle Island many times and had a Monthly Pass (reasonably priced) for the shuttle boat. Safe area for women to walk on their own. It's just a short trip to the island. Lots of well maintained trails, through the woods and along the sea. Ideal for making scenic pictures.

If you can walk 5 km with a light ocean breeze, this is the place for you. Best time is June 1 to mid September. Bring along food and water as there is no shopping. You can bring a bike too. Take time to explore the beaches. Ferry about every hour from swy-a-lana park.

We spent a very enjoyable afternoon at this Island, just a short ferry ride from downtown Nanaimo. A peaceful, natural place to explore, unwind. The day we were there, it was after the summer tourist season so very quiet too. They have many trails and they are easy to walk, well maintained. There is also a snack bar/restaurant, but it... I've been going here for decades and it's well worth a day trip or even a few nights camping. Pack a knapsack and hike and picnic. Have gone there on my canoe w/ kids and they love it! Beachcombing is fun.

There is both history and hiking available on Newcastle. Great views towards the open ocean and Vancouver and back to Nanaimo.

This island is a gem in our city, It is a great place for a day visit, take an early ferry (10 minute ride) this hike around the island. The views are awesome and the island has some interesting history. The hike is probably about 4 hours if you take your time so pack a lunch and picnic as you... More

Newcastle Island is not just a lovely little island to explore, but is also a repository of a great deal of local history. Canadian Pacific Railways used to ferry passengers over from Vancouver - imagine Edwardian ladies dressed for afternoon tea, and gentlemen in bowler hats strolling the grounds. Perhaps some lawn bowling, or live music and dancing? Or take... More
