We traveled from Vancouver to Kamloops and then on to Jasper. The accommodations on the train were first class from start to finish. The seats are very comfortable, they recline and have a leg extender. They also have a built in seat warmer if you get cold. The staff did an excellent job serving us. Your breakfast and lunch are served in a dining car. The food was very very good. A nice array of choices at each meal. Meanwhile, when you are in your seat you are treated to ANYTHING you want to drink, beer, wine, soda, and mix drinks. There is also a nice selection of snacks. One of the selling points of the train ride is the awesome sights, we did not find this to be true. I feel, this trip would not be of interest for teens or young children. While our guide, Kristy was very knowledgeable and pointed out many interesting things there was not a lot to see. By no means is that their fault. If you don’t have high expectations about seeing wildlife then you won’t be disappointed.

Review for The Journey through the Clouds at Leisure 9 day tour 27th June 22. Overall our 9 day Rockies tour 'Silver class' was lovely, mainly due to the stunning scenery , the Canadian people, the wildlife and good weather. On the train - the level of service was as expected but the overnight stay at Kamloops was very disappointing. We were assigned the Thompson Hotel while others in our carriage stayed at The Sandman Signature. The Thompson was basic, bedding was old, had issues with shower and dangerous electrical plugs. On the Rocky Mountaineer at Leisure tour ( 2 nights Jasper , 2 nights Lake Louise, 2 nights Banff and 1 night Calgary) again disappointed with some of the hotels/room standards. Expected better for the money paid. The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise and The Sheraton Wall center were wonderful, but The Forest Park Jasper and The Delta Calgary were grim. The Elk and Avenue was acceptable although the 'budget style'room as in most of the hotels had no nice view and mainly overlooked car parks. Luggage handling was supposed to be included. Yes at the Sheraton Wall Center and Fairmont Chateau and to our room only( not from) at The Thompson. None elsewhere!! We were able to manage but so difficult for those less mobile/elderly. On our printed tour document provided by the The Rocky Mountaineer it stated breakfast was included on Day 5. No one at the Forest Park Hotel told us this was provided by the hotel ( not on the tour as previous day )so we missed it and went hungry until 2.30pm lunch stop. Most hotel reception staff did not seem to appreciate we were 'part of a tour,' there was no one to ask , no representative or tour guide until you boarded the independent Brewster coach. Could have organised this better independently , better value with nicer hotels. Tip - do not waste a night staying at Calgary - it is only just over 2 hours from Banff direct to Calgary airport. Stay longer at Banff or even Lake Louise. Emailed the Rocky Mountaineer Guest Experience Team on 12th July. To date no response other than the automated response giving me an enquiry ref number. Chased twice now, nothing. Appalling customer service.

My wife and I decided to do the Goldleaf package and take the expensive long tour. It's hard to put in words how horrible it was. In our train ride ride from Vacouver to Kamloops the air conditioner in one of the cars broke down. This caused the train to stop and to wait for busses to come and to take those passengers from the train to Kamloops. It was extremely hot outside, and I heard that those busses didn't have airconditioning either. A little time later, there was an electric fire in one of the kitchen's in one of the cars. This led to Rocky Mountaineer to stop the air conditioner for the entire train. Soon, passengers, including myself and my wife were feeling ill. The heat was overwhelming, passengers were getting nauseous. A poor guy near me was vomiting. It was horrible. The AC did come back on, but cooled poorly. It was a miserable trip. To make matters worse we didn't get to the Kamloops hotel until about 10 pm. We also didn't get dinner, and had a hard time finding a restaurant that was open to get food. RM only gives breakfast and lunch, but doesn't give dinner. The only snacks were dried fruit, and nuts. When we got to the hotel, at that late hour, almost all the restaurants, were closed, and we had a hard time finding something to eat. According to its own documents, the arrival time is supposed to between 5:30 and 7:30. You would think that since the train had a lot of problems and sick passengers they would have opened the throttle and not have taken almost 14 hours to get us there. During this ride, I asked to speak to the manager and was ready to cancel the entire approx 10 day trip that day, but after thinking about it I just started the trip and decided to proceed. So I figured it was the first day, maybe day two would be better. The next day the air conditioner did work. We were picked up early in the morning again, 6 am, but didn't arrive again until about 10 pm, without dinner, again. You would think they would at least give sandwiches, especially since it was a repeat of day 1. Also, Kamloomps is not that far from Baanf, it's about 5 hours away by car. This left my wife and I very upset, angry, and hungry. Restaurants were closed. My wife gave up looking, just being utterly upset, but I persisted, found one, and brought back food for her. What a miserable time during the train. Also the getting picked up early and arriving so late was within itself very tiring and exhausting. Then I thought sightseeing must be wonderful. I paid a lot of money for this. This isn't a freight train I paid for. It was supposed to be a "luxury train." Sightseeing sucked too. They stopped at a garden, but we had 15 minutes to enjoy it. Then they had lunch, but it seemed more adequate for a children's day camp. Then my wife and I decided we had enough. That night I emailed guest experience and told them that we are cancelling the rest of the trip, and I called them as well. I wanted to give fair notice for them to cancel everything else that we had a reservation for. Any reasonable person would not want to want to go on a train in such misery, and we certainly weren't going to do it all over again, on a return trip. That they had us come twice in a row at around 10 pm without providing food, while we were "trapped" on their train was just a terrible experience. One would think that after paying so much money for their "luxury" trip, they would stand behind their service, but they don't. They refused to refund things which which we even didn't even use it, not even talking about the miserable train trips.

We did a GoAhead Tour which included two days on the train from Banff to Vancouver. This was expected to be the highlight of the trip; it was not. Masks were required if you were out of your seats. We bought Gold service. The food and drinks were good. The scenery for part of the first day was good, then it was pretty mundane. The trip was scheduled to be ten hours but because we had to wait for commercial traffic, the trip was twelve hours!! Way too long even if they were serving free drinks -- you can't drink that much! Day two of the trip was shorter but the a/c in our car was not working. We were sitting on the sunny side of the train and were lucky enough to move to the other side when the head was too much. There wasn't enough ice to keep us cool. The staff basically said that was the way it was. We should get a refund for day two as it was miserable. Also, the staff showed double-standards serving drinks to some people, while telling others they would have to wait -- for one reason or another. There definitely was some discrimination going on. The tour group who had their tour director sitting with them were treated much better than our group. Our tour director had to sit in Silver service level.

We took the train from Vancouver to Banff with the Gold Leaf pkg. It was not at all what we thought it would be. We paid $4500 for just the train ride for 2 people. For $1500 it would have been worth it. The customer service was bad. The food was good but portions small. They were so reluctant to do anything for us. Got one margarita which was basically water!!! The crew looked like they did not want to do anything more than the basoc for us. Not worth the price.
