This building is a rare opportunity to go back in time and see an piece of art deco. The outside is charming with the wooden revolving doors, the grand entrance way and the pieces of art carved into the outside of the walls. Take a moment to look at the carvings on the brass surrounding the door - seahorses. Look... More

The art deco architecture of the Marine building makes it one of my favourite buildings to visit. It is home to a couple of restaurants on the ground floor with offices above. Be sure to go inside the building and look at the elevators brass doors and inlaid walls. Take the elevator or stairs to the 2nd floor landing for... More

This building is offices upstairs, so it is not open on the weekend. I finally got to Vancouver mid-week, and was able to see the inside. Absolutely stunning! And a gentleman got off the elevator and told us we could go up to the 2nd level and view it all from there. Otherwise we wouldn't have known that.

Great to see a Grand Old Lady amidst slabs of modern glass -- next time hopefully I'll have time to check out the lobby which I hear is photo worthy.

Even if you're just walking by, this is a great stop for ten minutes to admire the architecture. Surrounded by buildings of glass, the intricate workmanship all throughout the building is beautiful and something to admire. We just walked by on our way back to our hotel, and it was definitely worth the extra block of walking!

The outside of the building has some great architecture. They don't allow you to see much inside unless you have business there, but the lobby is great and worth visiting.

Surely the Marine Building is the finest example of its kind in the world. Some compare it to the Empire State in New York, another icon of a by-gone era yet this building is more artistic in my view. Fortunately city fathers everywhere now understand a classic building should be saved so its art and heritage can be bequeathed to... More

See the Marine building if only to walk into the lobby and see the grandeur of the past. This was Vancouver at's best (biased as I am a history buff) The Marine building inside could be compared to the Empire State if not in scale, in detail and art. Someone else here in this forum noted that they felt the... More

Riding the elevators is truly an experience if you like the magnificent wood inside the elevators. They are a work of art, as is the insider of the building.

The detail of this art-deco building is magnificent - both inside, and out. Thankfully, one can enter the building...look up and walk all the way around. I found myself "ooohing" and "awwwing" to myself. I think you will, too.

Staying in Downtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Vancouver's business district, the Downtown area is bustling with smartly-dressed folks balancing their lattes and briefcases to and from work. The area's plethora of contemporary commercial, residential, and corporate spaces has bred a landscape of nouveau restaurants, chain cafes, and upmarket shopping options. However, located right on the waterfront of Vancouver's energetic Harbour, Downtown is a also popular public meeting spot, with a massive public library and convention center attracting a bevy of visitors both local and not, as well as a hotspot for the arts, being home to some of Vancouver's most cutting-edge galleries. With behemoth architecture and a professional air, Downtown means business.
