I loved the gannets and I seen many similar behaviours they exhibit to people. However there numbers are depleting. Fish is not as plentiful and both parents leave the nest to find food. Often returning to their baby missing or dead. A gorgeous place to hang out the whole day, take a picnic lunch. The path is long and you... More

Well worth the drive to get there! The fog descended for our visit but there's spellbinding scenery out there according to the photos and conversations with the wardens. Despite poor visibility we saw and heard thousands of gannets. At other times of the year, there are other bird species too. A day or two after our visit, there was a... More

It would be amazing to watch a full year pass at this site. As it was, we only had September 4th yet we were astounded by the vision of thousands of gannets. They shingled the rock tower mere metres from our perch at the end of an easy trail. We could hear their calls from the beautiful interpretive centre and,... More

A must see if you are in the eastern part of Newfoundland. One of the most amazing nature reserves we have ever seen. Being that close to 45,000 birds, literally feet away was breath taking. Definitely a MUST SEE!

This reserve is located at the southern end of the Burrin peninsula. It was quite a drive to get there from where we stayed but well worth it. To get to the actual reserve, it is a 13 km drive down a road that is barely wide enough for two cars. You will be driving across some interesting landscape made... More

It is hard to put into words the feeling you get when you reach Cape St Mary's, hike down that trail and see the cliffs, the sea washing against the rocks, and the birds...thousands of them! It is awe inspiring, spiritual even. It makes you want to stop and not speak and just sit in a rock, watch and listen.... More

My wife and I spent two weeks in Newfoundland in August and this was one of the most spectacular places we were at. You have to WANT to get here though. In this area of the province the main roads seem to be filled with more potholes than vehicles. But the side road to get to St Mary's seemed to... More

Make sure this is on that list of things you are going to do on the Avalon. It is a bit off the path but wow is it worth to see these birds clinging to the cliffs in the tens of thousands. Close as close can be and nature sure can overwhelm you here. Stop in next year for sure... More

Pros: The cliffs at St. Marys are home to colons of thousands of seabirds. Besides the immense colony of Northern Gannets, we got to see Black-backed gulls, bald eagles, ravens, kittiwakes, and cormorants. The trail is right along the edge of the cliffs so you get to see the gannet colony very close! We used binoculars and 10x optical camera... More

And...Cape St. Mary's Ecological Reserve is one of those special places on earth. Pictures and videos just can't do it justice. You need to use your senses of sight, smell, touch, and sound to really experience everything around you at this spectacular place. When you get to bird island, close your eyes and just listen. Open your eyes and watch... More
