The Halifax Farmers' Market was created by Royal Proclamation in June of...

The Halifax Farmers' Market was created by Royal Proclamation in June of 1750, a year after the founding of Halifax. The Governor and Council designated a site for the Market - the present day Bank of Montreal building. For 50 years this flesh, meat or cattle market, as it was known, sold produce as well as livestock delivered from Acadian farms in the Annapolis Valley and from local farm production.

In 1848 the City of Halifax was incorporated and the original City Charter conveyed the Country Market property to the city "for the public and common benefit and use of the City of Halifax according to the true interest and meaning of the original grant." The Market has operated in several locations across the city since its inception in 1750, but moved to the Halifax Seaport in 2010 where it is now known as the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market - the longest continuously running Market in North America and proudly hosting over 250 vendors!

Halifax Seaport

The Halifax Seaport is a vibrant arts and cultural district found at the south end of the Halifax waterfront. Extending from Piers 19 to 23, you will find artisans, retailers, cruise terminals, event facilities, cafes, galleries, offices, a museum, a university and the Halifax Seaport Farmers' Market. This district has been redeveloped to showcase local talent and is now a popular destination for locals and visitors alike.

Your go to for variety. Breakfasts, lunch, specialty foods groceries, entertainment, gifts etc. Tips: Do not bring your children if they are not used to very busy and fully packed places. Hard to walk through as there is so many people.

This is a fun place to go if you do like crowds and hustle and bustle. Lots to see and do and good live music. Plenty of choice for eating out and lots of crafts and homemade items. Sunday is a good day to go as free parking and not so many crowds. although not as many vendors here either.... More

I had read about this market online and attend Farmers markets in my home city and this one is very small. What vendors were there were very pleasant and there was some really neat handmade items.

Nice market with lots of food. Booths that sell organic fruits and veggies. This is where the cruise ships port, so this place can get pretty busy if there are more than one ship there. Lots of craft shops, breweries and eateries around.

Even though I had read on various sites such as TripAdvisor and others that the Farmer's Market would be open the first week of October, there was very little there, perhaps a dozen or so crafters and 1 or 2 places to get food. Apparently there are more vendors on the weekends but it looks like this market caters to... More

This market is located in the cruise ship terminal and is handy walking distance from much of the downtown area. The venders include a wide range of providers of produce, prepared food and crafts. For lovers of blue cheese, one should stop by "The Dutchman's Farm" kiosk. You will also find a number of wineries and distillers selling their products... More

Very busy on Saturday mornings. Free parking on Saturdays. Some nice baked goods - caraway seed rye sold out before 10:30 AM. Multiple fresh vegetable vendors with large selection of very fresh vegetables at average prices - no discount deals, however top quality. Seafood is fresh with decent selection. If you are looking for a good butcher with fresh beef,... More

This farmers market at the Halifax Seaport is a nice place to wonder around to find local foods & crafts. There were several places serving take away food. While there was not a lot there to see , it was worth a walk through as we returned to our ship.

Dropped by the market in off-season on a weekday. Obviously not as lively as on season or a weekend. Had a lobster roll at "Goldwater" which sells fish but makes rolls as well. It was a plain roll, no mayo etc in a nice bun. Lovely. About 8 bucks for s small. Fresh lobster. Nice large pieces.
