Founded in 1922, the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is one of Canada’s leading cultural institutions. Today, more than 225,000 patrons and over 50,000 students visit the Orchestra at Roy Thomson Hall each year, and an additional five million Canadians tune in to concert broadcasts on CBC Radio. Under the leadership of Music Director Peter Oundjian, the Orchestra has increased recording and touring projects to include a self-produced record label, and performances throughout the US and Canada. The Orchestra continues to develop its international presence by being an active commissioning body for new Canadian and international works, as well as attracting distinguished guest artists and conductors to performances at Roy Thomson Hall.

My husband and I are members of the TSO. The TSO offers a plethora of shows and varietal in nature. Recently we have seen Second City does the Symphony, 12 days of Christmas, Abba, Mozart and the Mendelssohn Choir to name a few. There is never a disappointment. They have exceptional talent at all levels and all musicians. The membership... More

I have been complaining for years that the guest performers for the Pops concert series at the TSO features American singers, so it was a delight that not only were the two singers - Chilina Kennedy and Ryan Silverman - Canadians, but so was the choir, the 100-plus voices of the Amabile Choirs of London.

I often go to hear the TSO, and I am fortunate to be in a choir that sometimes sings with the TSO. The variety of repertoire performed, the high level of musicianship, the talented Peter Oundjian make this orchestra a must to see and hear again and again!

We recently attended "Messiah" at the Toronto Symphony. The choir alone was 125 people and another 30 violins and other instruments and 4 soloists. A superb world class performance! The production was excellent and the conductor put so much feeling and life into it, that it became an emotional experience. The acoustics are so good, it feels like you will... More

It was fantastic to see for many young people at a TSO concert, and this year's Twelve Days of Christmas was an ideal setting to expose youngsters to a symphonic experience. And what a way for the TSO to set the stage for the Christmas season, with Colin Mochrie narrating the Twelve Days of Christmas, complete with 11 pipers piping.... More

The TSO was fantastic - we always like visiting the arts while traveling and this was no disappointment. Reasonably priced, but not at the expense of the performance. And there wasn't a bad seat in the venue. Excellent visit

Once again, I was delighted to attend a new TSO concert. Each time I go, it's always a special experience. This time, we had an encore interpretation of Cohen's Hallelujah on the piano played by Italian pianist Stefano Bollani. Simply beautiful and memorable. Thanks to all TSO musicians to bring such musical music. It warms the heart especially when it... More

As a local and lover of classical music, I discovered the symphony later on after my stay in Toronto. Long story short, this is the best symphony orchestra in town and definitely one of the better ones on the continent. If you're a classical music lover or like the symphony, you should not miss a chance at a show here.... More

Staying in Downtown West

Neighbourhood Profile
Downtown West
Downtown West is home to Toronto's gorgeous Inner Harbor, and is a must-visit for lovers of art and the outdoors. The area's rich cultural heritage is celebrated by a number of monuments and museums, giving the neighborhood a mature feel. As a premier destination for modern art, people here stroll through the cool contemporary pieces at the Power Plant, enjoy the outdoor installations along Queen's Quay and Canoe Landing, and picnic among the zany designs of the Toronto Music Garden. The waterfront itself is often suffused with bikers and joggers, and the harbor is always packed with classic ships with masts raised. The vintage boats and ferries to the Toronto Islands make for a charming contrast against Downtown West's backdrop of skyscrapers, condos, and food trucks serving up hot, fresh fare to locals on the go. The area has a peaceful energy, and is popular with tourists and Torontonians alike.
