This watering hole has been drawing jazz fans since it first opened in 1951. Admittedly the decor hasn't changed much since the old days, but the sounds you'll find here are cutting edge. The Rex lures top local and international talent; Tuesday is the weekly jam night.

Enjoyed ending a business day at The Rex listening to some avant garde jazz and improvisation while chatting up some new local friends over beer and nachos. Friendly staff and good beer selection. Jazz pretty much every evening starting at 6:30; sometimes a cover, particularly for later bands.

We heard about the Rex on the radio coming into Toronto. We were looking for Jazz and this was the first place that came up on our search. We also heard they have some of the best NACHOS in Toronto (and they were delicious!). We went early (about 5:00 pm) and there was surprisingly some room. It started getting busier... More

We really enjoyed our night here, the bartenders are fantastic, funny and on the ball! The live music was fantastic! Such a relaxing atmosphere!

Jazz like jazz is meant to be. I am fed up with these clubs where they charge you twenty bucks for a " sitting" from 08:15 till 09:45 and kick you out before ten, to be ready for the next sitting. New York clubs i am talking. Rex is so different. You walk in any time from late afternoon. Every... More

REX looks like the right place from outside and inside. I have been there quite a few times, in my years in Toronto. It changed for the better, when they started featuring music in the 80's. One of my perennial favorites is Laura Hubert, who has a regular gig there. The beer is affordable for Toronto and on my last... More

Overall, fantastic stay. I was here for six nights. The staff are extremely friendly. I was in Toronto going to many sporting events, I did not have time to spend the night listening to the bands or eating in the restaurant. I did see the menu and the prices are fantastic. Cheap pub grub for sure. Stay here if your... More

We were there last weekend, after scouring the net for a good place to listen to live blues / jazz in Toronto. Not the friendliest service in the world, weird set up of the room where there is a giant brick column blocking several tables' view of the stage and performers. Add to that the most underwhelming jazz band I... More

Sadly jazz is going the way of the dinosaur and hence it is hard to find a good jazz club in a lot of cities these days. I don't think I noticed anyone in The Rex who was under 45. We arrived very late and we were still required to pay the full cover charge despite the fact there was... More

We booked the Rex mainly for price and location but arriving there 3 hours late, at 9pm, we were greeted by Tom who raced out the bar, checked us in an show us to our room. Now if you are looking for modern with en suites this is not for you or maybe it is, try it, sure the bathrooms... More

Staying in Queen Street and West Queen West

Neighbourhood Profile
Queen Street and West Queen West
Known as the Art & Design District, West Queen West is one of the most energetic and dynamic of Toronto's neighborhoods. Along with its great modernist museums, clubs, and restaurants, it's home to some of the funkiest specialty shops, ranging from clothing to stationary to collectables, and caters to niche and vintage shoppers of all kinds. That makes it a mecca for creatives, including hobbyists designers, writers, and painters. With ink on their hands and fabric pelts in their bags, visitors to Queen Street traverse the avant-garde blend of historic architecture and ultra-contemporary fare. Home to some of Toronto's chicest hotels and most modish java fixes, busy with street cars, and always suffused with live music drifting onto packed patios at bars and clubs by nightfall, the vibrancy of West Queen West is undeniable.
