We saw St. Louis Gate on our way to the Plains of Abraham after we left the Parliament Building. The St. Louis Gate is one of the four surviving gates in the Quebec City wall ramparts.

One of many gates in the old town. Interesting to see and a lot of fun to pass through. Definitely reflect the unique character of Old Quebec City and its culture.

The nice thing about the great gates of Quebec City is that most are still in use today - folk just walk through them and some allow motorised traffic. They look magnificent but I have no idea if they could be defensive. Anyway, they look impressive and are highly photogenic.

The Rue Saint-Louis affords many examples of the architecture of the 1700s & 1800s. It ends @ the Fairmont le Château Frontenac & port. Spanning over the Rue is the Porte Saint-Louis, the gateway to Old Quebec. The impressive medieval Porte is a castle fortress dating back to 1694. It was reconstructed over the years ~ the gate we see... More

We traveled just after Christmas, when there was a public skating rink set up next to the gate. It was an attractive boundary between the Vieux Quebec and the modern part of town.

You can cross this reconstructed gate on the way up to the Citadel. It could be as far as you need to walk.

If you enjoy walking take the time to walk in and through the main gates into the fortified old city. It is fun to see the different styles of houses and buildings and the large number of churches. It is worth taking a city tour to get the most information.

The Porte St Louis is the southwest gateway into the old town. WIth it's tower crenelated walkway it looks like small castle. It is located on Rue Saint Louis a block north east of the parliament building, 3 short blocks south west of the Château Frontenac, a block north west of the citadel on the south east end of the...
