Te Mata's entire focus is fine wine production. There's no restaurant or accommodation here, only a small Cellar Door for tastings. It's open daily over summer, and Wednesday to Saturday in Winter. Coleraine House opposite the winery is on private property and the home of the Buck family - the winery's owners. We do try and leave them in peace and quiet when we can. :) Te Mata is an estate producer - meaning it grows its own fruit on this property, then ferments and bottles that wine onsite. It’s a 'one stop shop' for wine production and export - rather than a food or entertainment venue. Independent, and New Zealand family-owned for over 120 years, the winery and vineyards were the first in New Zealand to be protected under conservation law as a wine-making heritage site - the 'Te Mata Special Character Zone'. Five of Te Mata's Showcase wines are listed as 'Five Star’ and ‘Super Classic' in Michael Cooper's Buyer's Guide to New Zealand Wine. The winery has been awarded Robert Parker's highest classification 'Outstanding Producer, Five Stars'. Te Mata Estate wines are available in 45 countries.

Just a small room with tastings of the cheapest wines in their selection. Bookings are required for tours, so we were left wondering what to do after the tasting. Wouldn't reccomend

We stopped by here between Craggy Range and Black Barn and were _very_ underwhelmed. The tasting is 7.50 and is of some of their down-label wine. Nothing interesting. Can't try their Coleraine. It feels more like the winery's back office with a minimal "tasting room"...More

We stopped in early for a wine tasting and were surprised by the most friendly informative and easy going host in Hawkes Bay. And the wines were sensational!

Not sure what all the fuss is about this place. We were stung $7.50 for a meagre tasting (probably the most minuscule pours we have ever seen) of some pretty awful, thin, wine with little to no palette. Probably a good thing the pours were...More

The best wine in Hawkes Bay, perhaps New Zealand is available here. Excellent display and service. Great tasting.

Wines here are unique and tasty. The woman who did our wine tasting was super friendly and knowledgable on wine. She also gave us helpful tips for things to do in the area.

We all have different tastes in wine, but the wine wasn't as impressive as at some other wineries. $5 tasting fee. Also, the tasting room is not in the beautiful and architecturally-interesting Estate on the hill, but in a building up the road and across...More
