Point Bonita today is part of the largest urban national park in the United States, the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. A secret jewel of the Bay Area, Point Bonita is still an active lighthouse. The U.S. Coast Guard maintains the lighthouse and the National Park Service provides access to visitors. Point Bonita Lighthouse is reached by a half mile trail that is very steep in parts. Discover Point Bonita's wild landscape, geology and fascinating history. The tunnel halfway to the lighthouse is open only during visiting hours: Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays from 12:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

If you get a chance, go! It's an amazing place! An active lighthouse built in the 1800s...open to the public only from Saturday to Monday (12.30-3.30pm). So worth the trip. The views are to die for!

This place is wonderful, I've been here multiple times. Make sure you check the schedule, the lighthouse is only open certain days and hours. I get the latest by Googling "Point Bonita Lighthouse". There are several ways to get to the lighthouse: the most spectacular...More

Make sure you wear a jacket and hoodie or strapped hat...very windy going down the hill and over the bridge to the lighthouse. Only open on weekends for 3 hours. They need more volunteers to work here and other areas. Bring a camera too and...More

This lighthouse is at the very northwest tip of land just north of the Golden Gate. The location is dramatic and the views back to the City are truly unique. It's about a 20 minute drive West from 101 and then a 15 minute easy...More

Love the ocean and Golden Gate Bridge views from this location! While we were there, we saw several sea lions swimming in the water below and huge waves crashing into the rocks on the ocean side.

Great site to visit, you would need at least 3 hours from SF Town to drive & walk the area a bit. The view is amazing, best to go on sunny days!

First remember that the Lighthouse only opens Sat - Mon. The views are amazing, the short bridge walk to the Lighthouse is good and there are just 49 people allowed at a time. The sea is spectacular - sadly we didn't see whales but maybe...More

Sorry for taking so long to answer! It's steep in one part, but definitely doable at a slow pace. It is paved up to the tunnel entrance, the tunnel has a paved part in the middle with rocks and dirt on the sides (it's kind... More

Hi! I really would love to do this bike route, how safe is this route for a women traveling by herself?

Response from Louie M | Reviewed this property |
I'm not certain biking is allowed on the actual path. It's narrow and there are people going in both directions. I'm sure you can park your bike before entering. It's really safe and many people and families visit the site.

Can a little electric mobility cart make it to the lighthouse?

Response from Louie M | Reviewed this property |
I don't think it'd be able to. The road isn't completely paved. There is also a bridge one must cross to the actual lighthouse.
