Amazing Islands, snorkeling and scuba diving Mecca. Food and hospitality we’re amazing. We went to a fire show on one of the neighbouring Islands, a must see!

The Perhentians have been popular with tourists for many years and for good reason. An enjoyable island(s) experience awaits all who visit. There is plenty of information on the internet relating to transport, accommodations and locations. Some additional information follows.
Keep in mind when planning your visit that many services are not available during the monsoon season ie October to March inclusive.
There are no ATMs so make sure your cashed up before you arrive.
Meals are more expensive than what you will find on the mainland as everything has to be brought in by boat.
If you smoke bring your own cigs. My cigs are MYR15.40 - 15.90 on the mainland. The souvenir shop at Suhaila Palace on Perhentian Besar charged me MYR25 a pack.
Trails on both islands are badly in need of maintenance and have poor signage.
Taxi boats to various locations between and around the two islands have set fees for 1 person but the catch is minimum 2 persons thereby making it more expensive for solo travelers.
One annoyance is the lack of connecting transport at Merang jetty. The first public boat departure is at 9am. The only bus going from Merang jetty to Mersing daily departs at 9.30am. Not exactly user friendly public transport. I had to pay MYR500 for a private boat to be able to connect with the 9.30am bus.

The crystal clear waters meant even viewing all types of marine life from the boat jetty possible. The cooling breezes from the sea to the land made perhentian islands so much cooler than our landlocked city of petaling jaya.

The water was crystal clear and sooo blue and beautiful. We snorkelled twice - saw many reef sharks, 4 Napoleon fish (ugly but amazing), 2 large turtles (about 1m long), thousands of tropical fish, some pretty coral. Was amazing. Take your mosquito repellent with you as plenty of mozzies. Approx a fun filled 30-40 mn “ferry” ride from Kuala Beset. Highly recommend you go there.

Another set of beautiful Malaysian islands, no better no worse than many of the others - I find it difficult to pick a favourite - none are perfect, all have been worth visiting. Kecil island, where we stayed, was lovely, on the west side, near Rainforest Beach - it was quiet at the midway point and lots of beautiful rainforest and beaches and charm. Again, some of the resorts are a little 'heavy', but there are plenty of places to retreat to. The east side of the island, with Long Beach, was too noisy, busy and built up. We arranged transport with our hotel, who picked us up at the airport and took us to the island, RM250, round-trip. It was a good value well organised option. Perhentians are worth a visit - a wonderful place to relax and enjoy the sea and views.

Spent a few blissful nights on Perhentian Besar island. Caught water taxis to various beaches on both Besar and Kecil islands and also hired a private boat for a snorkelling tour (just my family) including a visit to the beautiful Rawa Island beach. Accommodation/cafes on both Perhentian islands slowly opening up after Covid but still quiet which was great. Flew into Kota Bahru - caught a taxi to Kuala Besut (50 mins) and then onto a boat for the crossing (50 minutes). Crossing can be a bit rough, life jackets provided.

1. Hey travelers, Perhentian Island located at Kuala Besut, Besut District, Terengganu.

2. Perhentian Islands had two main islands and we called Perhentian Kecil (located Long Beach) and Perhentian Besar.

3. How about the transportation ? You come with a bus, taxi, ehalling or personal vehicle. How to get that ? You can come from Kuala Terengganu or Kota Bharu by express bus.

4. You can go to the express bus kiosk at the bus station (Terminal Bus Kuala Terengganu/ Kota Bharu) and ask the price and the bus will pass through Kuala Besut.

5. Some travelers like to go to Redang Island,Bidong Island or Lang Tengah Island (later I will share my experience).

6. After you reach Kuala Besut by bus, the bus will stop at Kuala Besut Station Bus (Town Kuala Besut). Or if you come with our vehicle (motorcycle or car) make sure to find parking (fee around RM 10.00 for car and motorcycle RM2.00 but if safe).

7. If you are walking in to come here, please don't walk in on the weekend (Friday, Saturday and Sunday) due to being so busy and crowded with tourists.

8. How much is the package Perhentian Island? Around RM 50 - 60 for a day trip and accommodation please use Booking.com, Trivago and so on. How much are you going to spend on accommodations? It depends on you but I suggest staying at Long Beach (crowded with travelers but you can do many things). If you want to relax, cool and private you can try at Perhentian Besar.

9. I just advised that mode of transport at Perhentian was boat or ferry and the cost was “pretty good’’. Please stay at Perhentian Kecil okay.

10. What to eat at Perhentian ? I suggest bringing some food on the island because the price is not bad. Expect , you must try BBQ with fresh seafood.

Thank you, any question and please comment below.
