There are many cemeteries in Verdun. In fact it looks like Verdun is one giant cemetery. But this one is the most solemn and dignified. And the most beautiful. It is definitely the place you must visit when you are in Verdun.

This area is so rich with the history of the battle at Verdun, and the ossuary is a beautiful tribute to those who lost their lives in the battle. The drive through and around it is full of memorials and areas dedicated to entires villages...More

The huge Ossuary building overlooks a very large cemetery for the fallen soldiers of France and its allies during the battles near Verdun. Inside the ossuary are the bones of soldiers whose identity is presumably unknown. There is nothing to do here but to ponder...More

The whole place and its surroundings is very depressing. It is saddening that on such a relatively small area so many people died senselessly.

"Grand" doesn't begin to do this memorial complex justice. The high tower offers views over countryside with a sombre history, the halls inside seemed to shimmer and hum, the moving film has imprinted on my memory, the sheer number of white crosses is staggering and...More

I was truly humbled and moved by the Ossary. It was €6 for the cinema and tower, but you can walk around and into the Ossary for free. I had heard the name of the Verdun battlefield but didn't have a clue at the carnage...More

Verdun is arguably the most significant battleground of WWI. The ossuary is a poignant monument to all those who died in this horrifically bloody war. The building itself is a remarkable example of Art Deco architecture with windows at ground level showing the countless piles...More

The sheer size of the Ossuary and cemetery is awe inspiring and the fact there over 130,000 bones belonging to unkown soldiers (both French and German) recovered from the surrounding battlefields buried underneath give it a sense of proportion. The Windows into the Ossuary are...More
