Worth a small detour

Rather enormous monument built by a rich merchant to show off. Only remaining one of probably hundreds such structures along this route.

The Igeler Säule is undeniably impressive to see, especially considering when it was built, and how it was saved from destruction by the catholic church, by the local priest. Even Goethe (of Faust fame) wrote about it. That being said, you'll maybe spend half an hour looking at it, reading up on it's history, and then you're through. There simply... More

A sandstone burial column which is the largest such north of the Alps, testifying to the prosperity of a family of cloth merchants around 250 ce. There is a convenient parking plot on the opposite side of the road, but watch the deep kerb when leaving!

Nothing spectacular. If you happen to be in this village, you can go and have a look at it, if you can find itm but it is not worth going specially.

Majestic!!! Built 3rd century, 9 km west of Trier. Inscription mentions the brothers Secundinius Aventinus and Secundinius Securus, who raised the 23 m high sandstone tomb monument during their life for themselves and their family members.
