On our way back home from Madrid, we took the EX-207 (among other roads) to go through Marvão, and that put us unknowingly on a course over the ancient bridge over the River Tajo/Tejo near Alcántara. An amazing sight! And from reading the interpretive signs...More

This was an amazing site due to its antiquity- @103 AD!! Knowing Romans used the bridge so long ago is plenty to think about!! A beautiful area! Although a bit far from Madrid, the sites in Extremadura are worth traveling to.

Just the thought that the Romans built with a view to the future and how history has shown what a marvellous structure it is.

It is amazing that this bridge was built by the Romans and we cans still drive on it! Stop, get out and marvel at this structure. Stop and wonder if in 1,500 years someone else will be doing the same.

You can actually drive across the old Roman Bridge, which is worth doing to go and see the view of the lake above the dam. Look for the sign 'mirador'.
