We were with a couple and they wanted to visit this church to see the "Black Christ" so we did. Nice quaint church.

We had visited the Black Christ Church several times. However, we were truly blessed to attend one of the largest events of the year, THE CRISTO NEGRO FESTIVAL. Thousands of people make a pilgrimage to Portobelo from all over the world. The event is in October. It was AMAZING! If you are able to attend this event, you will not... More

I noticed a sign at the entrance stating that inappropriate clothing was not allowed, I was wearing shorts but had driven for almost two hours to get to Portobelo. Meaning no disrespect, I entered for a quick peek of the Black Christ and luckily could see him in the glass casket, said my prayers and left. Children in the parking... More

This is a famous landmark in Panama. I was not touched as many are when visiting. You will see bus loads of students visiting the Church of the Black Christ. The church is old and very simple. Please note shorts and tank tops are not allowed in the church.

The church is lovely and peaceful. We visited it on our recent family trip to Panama. We sat at the church for a little while, admiring the history behind it. The statue of the Black Christ is well decorated. It helps to have read up a little on the legend behind the Black Christ statue, it made the visit more... More

There are a lot of stories attached to the Black Christ and it's well worth stopping at the church to view. I don't think I'd personally drive all the way to Portobelo to see it, but some believers go to extensive efforts to show their respects... even crawling on their knees through town to the church. The church is not... More

The church is lovely in and of itself but the statute is amazing and very moving - his robe had lots of trinkets hanging off of it - many were religious medals but there was also a VW beetle, a gold bracelet and other interesting things so look closely. Consider making a donation because they are in the process of... More
