A stunning cave that is worth the time and effort to get there. Be advised to wear good footwear, it is possible to rent shoes there if your shoes are not adequate.

BE ADVISED, this is a physical demanding trip, if you have any mobility difficulties or have trouble with steps/ladders I would recommend windy caves instead.

The Fairy caves are very doable but you must wear closed, good grip shoes. There are 4 levels of stairs to climb to the entrance, then more stairs inside. Some of the metal ladders are in the dark so bring a good torch or headlamp. There are bats and swiftlets nesting, and some amazing rock sculptures. Beautiful.

Very pretty and peaceful place after a short hike. A couple of things are to park behind the old shed like building at the turnoff concrete lane across from the old church and walk in from there. At the bottom of the steps/trail as you face the pond the carvings in the rock face are to your left. The path is just above the path at the pond level. The Fairy Cave is from the same level but to the right. Both are a little tricky to find and are not main looking paths. Do look around as they are nice to find. We continued up the trail past the pond and went up the stepped trail to the top of the hill. Some beautiful views. This was a really nice little excursion.

Visited late July, great drive on bike getting to Fairy Caves - but no visit because of temporary closure until further notice. Pity.

These Caves have a lot of Natural History million years it is beyond description by a ordinary character I have seen caves here in the Deep South East Land of Auz and these are A Class Of their Own
the fascinations will never cease to amaze those who love and value the formations of Earth and its Caves a Natural Wonder that we still don't understand and most men cannot build such a natural wonder that keeps me spellbound

We first visited the Fairy cave back in 2000 and since then the steps tower seems to be in some need of repair. it was however open whe we returned last October 2018 so up we went. A stedy climb up four or five stories brings you to the cave entrance where care is needed to thread your way through some more dark damp slippery steps which pass through quite a narrow crevice. Once in here the cave opens up to reveal a large collapsed cave and there are several more flights of steps in varying steepness to area's of intrest, there is an alter a view point and a few of what looks like boreholes formed when the cave was home to a flowing water. There are stalactites and stalagmites. One very large one on the way to the viewpoint. I have seen bats and Butterflies in the cave and I am sure several other creatures. The caves are currently closed for repairs to the steps, but being as they are so high safety must be a priority. Some have given poor reviews because the caves are closed, better to close than to claim a life.

In these days there is a vertical set of stairs. As you are ascending you will see the remnants of the original means of access. It was like a goat track up a cliff. If you are into limestone caves then put this on your list. I felt a little sad when we had a good luck around the entry area at the base. There were some ruins of what were once B&B's I guess this area was too far off the beaten track to make the enterprise viable.

Is it so difficult to keep tourists (who travel thousands of miles to your country) informed of the closure of the caves?
Hardly anyone we spoke to in Kuching knew that the Fairy Cave was still closed (after so many months). So we hired a car and drove all the way only to Bau, only to find it shut!
You really made a severe dent in confidence and belief in Sarawak tourism. WHAT is so hard to send an e-mail to all hotels to advise the front-line staff to keep visitors informed?? Isn't that what a Tourism agency is for??

Arrived early Feb 2019.The concrete steps to access the cave are closed due to safety problems so there is no access and the caves are closed. We were told the steps (approx 4 or 5 stories tall) are to be replaced. No work has started yet, and no materials were on site, so I can imagine this taking many months. If you're planning a visit by public transport or hire car, suggest you check with a local tour operator before you set off.
