For a unique arts and conservation day-out, visit Rotoroa Island in Auckland’s beautiful Hauraki Gulf. Rotoroa was New Zealand’s first and longest running addiction treatment centre until its closure in 2005. Today, after a five year redevelopment programme, the restoration of heritage buildings and the construction of an award-winning museum and exhibition centre, it is a conservation estate rich in social history. Swim, relax, explore; sandy beaches, heritage buildings, exhibitions, nature trails, art, boutique accommodation and more.

The island is simply beautiful - you feel like you are there all by yourself. The hiking trails are really well marked, and it's easy to do most of the walking in two hours. The beaches, especially Men's Bay, are just stunning. There is a water fountain in the main area but bring your own lunch. I did feel that... More

I love ferries, so the 75 minute trip from Auckland to Rotoroa Island was perfect. The crew were great and it was interesting to see Waiheke Island from the sea. When we arrived at the island, there was an introduction to the island and a briefing reminding everyone to take all their litter home with them. You need to take... More

We drove to Orapiu on Waiheke Island and were picked up by the 360 Discovery ferry from Auckland en-route to the Coromandel. It's just a 10-minute cruise across to Rotoroa where disembarking passengers are met by the resident manager and briefed on the wild-life and endangered species we would see on the island and had our day-packs checked for pests... Fabulous boat trip and wonderful day walking around the island. If you want to see all the island there is quite a bit of walking involved and a reasonable level of fitness is required. Boats permitting you only need 4-5 hours there.

We visited Rotoroa Island yesterday, it was a wonderful day out and very educational. The Fullers ferries are always great, always on time, fab service and clean! It's always such a beautiful trip out into the Gulf. On arrival you are met by island staff who do a quick briefing and check of food. Please remember you need to take... More

Hi Lauren, Thanks so much for sharing your visit with Trip Advisor community; we're happy to hear you enjoyed exploring the island and experience the wonderful encounters by the Auckland Zoo team; a great insight into how Rotoroa is emerging as a wildlife sanctuary. Hope to welcome you back soon. Kindest, Rotoroa Island Trust team More

The island used to be run by the Salvation Army many years ago and alcoholics were sent here as pert of their "drying out" period. Today it remains a treasure, reminding us of our past endevours and an island sanctuary for some of our rare birdlife, including a breading program for Takahe. The island has a wonderful museum, and original... More

Myself and 3 12 yr old boys stayed in the SuperIntendents quarters for the long weekend. Fantastic weekend. Being picked up off the ferry by the local host and having our bags transported to the lodge was an unexpected bonus. Very clean modern basic accomodation set up - dishwasher, lots of fridges, great space etc and great value for money.

We've been going on for awhile now and couldn't recommend Rotoroa more. Six of us went over last weekend for a boys overnight fishing trip. The Island is small enough to navigate around extremely easy and can be fished from any point and ledge. We stayed at the Superintendent's House which has a big kitchen area so we could all... More

11 of us came over last Friday night and stayed at Serenity. We just had to bring all our food and beverages and everything else is supplied. The house was absolutely brilliant - great décor and well appointed. They have thought of everything here right down to hot water bottles, beach towels, free wifi (loved that!) and a great kitchen.... More
