First long summer like weekend and couldn't find any parking near Wreck Beach, so took a friend's advice and checked out Iona Beach, near the airport in Richmond, BC. The road there is long and you get to see some horses on one side and...More

Iona Beach has long been popular with Vancouverites. Despite being right by the airport it has a wild feel to it. The wind can whip in off the water, but on a calm sunny day out of season it is a quiet place and a...More

We're keen birders and love a nice walk. Iona beach is great for both. There's also a large pond with lots of ducks and a nice trail all around. We were here on a windy day and it was stunning.

This is indeed a nice little retreat within Richmond a little away from the hustle and bustle of Richmond city life. Pretty easy to find as it is a straight road from the Glen MacAurther mall. Pass the sewage recycle plant and refineries and where...More

This is a gorgeous place to visit if you are looking to find a peaceful spot. Not very well known and a little hard to find. But well worth the effort. Love the water, the breeze and the quiet.

This is a peaceful place for walks near the beach at low tide or on the water treatment pipe road. It is also a great place for bird watching as many colorful species inhabit the area. Parking is good, but bring your own food and...More

This beach is near the airport so excellent for plane watching. I'd suggest going to the right along the beach and not along the causeway directly out into the ocean. You can walk along the beach for quite aways (maybe 3 km) before you have...More

Is this something that's easy to get to if I have a long layover (3-4 hours) at the airport?

Catch the shuttle to the South Terminal and walk along the river there and stop at the Flying Beaver Pub for some good food and then take the shuttle back

I have walked Iona beach for the last 20yrs or so. The high water marks have not changed over this time. The tide flow presents no danger. Most people seem to walk the 4KM "pipeline" but following the beach westwards is a more natural hike. On a clear winter night it provides a glorious sight across the Georgia Straights to Vancouver Island and the lights along the north shore mountains.

I would like to know how the MVPB, and Richmond Mayor Brodie can seriously justify the SR/SS hours of operation applicable to this scenic gem of nature. So far I have been emailed by the Park Staff and listened to Mayor Brodie giving the following reasons. " there are no street lamps" "vandalism" "dumping" "prevent camping" ..all in the interest of public safety. These reasons are simply an outrageous expression of paternalistic authority and give cause to evoke strong public reaction to this denial of basic freedom to roam along an open expanse of shoreline.
