Overlooking the market place in the centre of Cambridge, this beautiful church dates back to 1205 - even older than the University of Cambridge! Great St Mary's was built, rebuilt, burned and built again over the centuries. The current building is largely Tudor. King Henry VII donated 100 oak trees to build its roof and Queen Elizabeth I visited the church in 1564 and gave an impressive Latin speech to the assembled scholars. Interactive touchscreens and a short film about royal Cambridge offer a perfect introduction to the history of Cambridge. Visitors can climb the tower for stunning views of King's College Chapel and the city. We also offer brass rubbing and children's activities during busier times of year. Great St Mary's is the church at the heart of Cambridge and hosts regular services, concerts, debates and community events.

This place is absolutely amazing, it is very cheap to get to the tower. For what is worth it is a definite sight to visit in Cambridge. You can see for miles on a good day.

The church itself is worth a look, with a bold tower and ornate architecture, but once inside it multiplies itself, and the views from the top of the tower are magnificent.

The view from the top is well worth the effort even with bad knees. Glad to avoid busy times as only one way up/down.

We climbed up the tower and were rewarded with amazing views in all directions. Plenty of photo opportunities and a good way of getting your bearings too. Useful booklets and leaflets in the Chechen, and church people keen to chat about its history and recent works.

This church is not the most beautiful or awe-inspiring church I have ever visited but it is generally considered to be the centre point of Cambridge and the place from which the university started. So it has great historical significance and for this alone it is worthwhile to visit inside and out. Inside it is lovely and well cared for... More

I live in cambridge but had only heard recently that climbing this church tower was possible. I'm not good with heights but it's very secure at the top and the views across the whole city are great. This is a must do while your visit our amazing city.

You can't miss it ! You have to climb 120 stairs and is an adventure when someone comes back from the tower-no space and is not great for claustrophobic people because narrow space. But the feeling when you are there worth the effort. You have to pay £3.90 for a tickets but take it as a donation. And they accept... More
