Ely is one of England's cathedrals that had eluded me; until now. First of all, getting there is very easy and Ely operates a free parking system, which was so easy to use. The cathedral was absolutely stunning. Unlike many cathedrals in Ely you could...More

This building is absolutely beautiful, and has many, many details to see, from the small chapels, the stained glass museum, the roof of the nave, and the 8000 pipe organ (visit for evensong most days to hear it). Perhaps the most splendid part of the...More

The Cathedral is a lovely architectural masterpiece and unexpectedly large! It is well maintained and there is a lot to see inside - from the beautiful stained glass to the octagonal painted roof and some fascinating sculptures. Well worth a visit and, of course, a...More

As you approach Ely by road, Ely Cathedral rises up out of the Fens. It is a truly remarkable building; such a feat of architecture and engineering, especially the tower and octagonal lantern, built after the crossing tower collapsed into the choir in 1322. The...More

Visited the cathedral on a Wednesday as we saw that children's activities are taking place each Wednesday throughout the summer holidays. All activities were free. My eight year old son spent almost two hours making paper lanterns, brass rubbing, threading beads, making fridge magnets and...More

We were luck to visit on a Sunday when entrance is free compared with £6.00 per person on other days. Externally the variety of towers has to be seen to be believed, hardly any symmetry. Inside you can't miss the octagonal tower, fantastic from below,...More

What an absolutely amazing building this is. Everywhere you look - from the stone pillars to the vaulted ceilings to the stained-glass windows - there are things that are jaw-dropping, bearing in mind how long ago they were created. Although there is a charge to...More

The cathedral is, of course, wonderful, but we were pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food at their restaurant and the beauty of the stained glass museum. It was a wonderful day and an easy commute by train from Cambridge. Highly recommend Ely.

Not too far, about ten or fifteen minutes, along the river, then through the gardens and park, and along The Gallery to the West door.
