Ely Museum, a bright and friendly local history museum, located in the Bishop's Gaol in the centre of the historical city of Ely. The Museum is the history centre for the Isle of Ely & the Fens and it takes you on a journey through time from prehistory to the twentieth century.Displays include original prison cells, fossils that can be touched, Roman remains and an archive film of the Fens including punt guns and eel catching.A museum guide, children's activities, toilets and a gift shop make this an ideal destination for all of the family.

We visited this small but well formed museum on a winter Friday afternoon. It is well laid out and had lots of explanations of the locally found exhibits. The film on eel fishing on the fens was informative. The old goal was suitably unpleasant in...More

Although there has been a museum in Ely for a long time the displays are modern and fresh.Showing the old plank walls from its time as a prison in situ is very clever indeed. Of course the great torque is a superb exhibit and worth...More

I was rather taken with this museum. The staff was knowledgeable and happy to share what they knew. The museum itself runs the gamut in terms of time period and focus, and I enjoyed dipping into different eras of Ely. The exhibit on the fens...More

This has quite a varied collection of items from Ely's history, and delightful staff! It is a guide yourself museum, with one steep staircase, but this has a chair lift. Plenty to look at from archive film of eel fishing in the fens, to WW2...More

Lots of local information about Ely throughout time. Apart from a family, we had the whole place to ourselves and there is a little patio garden area with a bench and pond to recharge batteries. Staff friendly and helpful

It is a small museum but an ideal way to spend an hour or two. There are some interactive things like dressing up for children. It shows the history of Ely and the area.

a brilliant museum in a quite part of ely, the exhibits need more time than we had to spare, a full day is needed to do justice, well laid out , excellent exhibits, worth our visit to ely just to come here

Step out of the back door of the Lamb hotel and you will find this museum. We simply love unassuming museums that must struggle to be viable yet pack so much into their collections. This is no exception, a TARDIS formed from the old gaol...More

Ely Museum is a good museum. It is hard for me to say great only because I really love the setup of the Burwell Museum. But I think that those living here temporarily, such as the Americans stationed here, it is a good place to...More
