Though a short walk from the centre of town, this was a worthwhile detour (and not just to get out of the rain). Though I was there at the same time as a large group of primary school children on a school trip (necessitating careful planning of the order in which I was going to visit the galleries!) I did... The magnificent large glass display cases were virtually empty, we thought the museum must have been burgled of its exhibits. Very disappointing show for a major Roman city. The tour became more bizarre when stepping through a doorway into a Victorian household, even the caretaker was unable to explain the fast forward transition from a Roman culture to the Victorian... The museum has a good range of exhibits detailing a lot of the history, both man-made and natural, of the area. Definitely worth the 2 hour visit and the small donation.

I visited here many times while I was studying Roman history as some of the things they have are truly outstanding. They have done an excellent job of taking the history of Chester and making it understandable to everyone :) Well worth a visit!

If you are in Chester and have a spare hour or so then this is a MUST visit. There are two video's you can watch which are VERY interesting. Its free to get into....they ask for a contribution.....I paid it.......A must visit for Cestrians and Visitors alike.

Some interesting exhibits and research done here. Lovely architecture in such a classic building. Particularly like the stuff on Chester's past.

We were so impressed with the detailed research that has been undertaken and the exhibits. The staff are really helpful and you learn so much from what what has gone in Chester before.

I finally visited the Grosvenor after living on the Wirral for a decade. Parking near the racecourse is convenient. Entry is free. The museum has a strong emphasis on Roman history and more widely the history of Chester. We enjoyed the special exhibition about Roman medicine and the natural history gallery, which is filled with Victorian stuffed animals. Make sure... More
