One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Worth a visit, but not extensive. Built as a defence against attacks on Dartmouth, rather than as a residence of the landed gentry. We took the ferry there and walked back to town (about 20 mins)

Lovely to walk or ferry to but English Heritage overprice the entry as is usual for them - and no I don't want to take advantage of this quango' s membership. I was brought up in a time when these monuments were free. I remember...More

The views from the watch tower over the river are spectacular and the information available is interesting however there is not as much of a castle as you may expect from the outside easily done within an hour but certainly worth the visit if in...More

This English Heritage site is located at the mouth of the Dartmouth river with great views. The castle has a long history of protecting the town of Dartmouth mostly from French raids. Lots of cannons, some audio stories of the castles past and well maintained....More

Actually it's a lot of history over a long period of time especially if you take in a visit to St Petrocs Church. A small but very well laid out exhibition with a very knowledgeable and interesting host. All the exhibits were well presented. I...More

An interesting castle with medieval and Victorian sections. It’s a bit different to other castles as the aim was to defend Dartmouth from raids by sea. We went in the late afternoon and had plenty of time to see everything before it shut. St. Petroc’s...More

there are a lot of steep challenging steps so I'd advise against this one for anyone with mobility issues.
