One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

We walked from Dartmouth down to the castle, there are great views along the way. On our midweek visit in early October there were not many visitors so the castle was not crowded. There is plenty of information to explain the history of the castle...More

An interesting wander through history around the fort and castle, but overpriced in comparison to most other English Heritage / National Trust properties.

Always worth a wander round the castle if visiting Dartmouth and this is a great place to spend a few hours. The coffee shop was nice and the staff were all very friendly.

A small castle with an interesting history. Plenty of information boards and some interactive activities for younger ones. Fantastic coastal views. Great place to spend an hour if you love your history.

Interesting castle, though only suitable for a short visit, also nice cafe onsite with delicious cakes. Warning, lots of steps inside so to get the most out of the visit, be prepared to climb. Also recommend walking from Dartmouth rather than driving, and for the...More

Quite an interesting castle. It doesn't look much from outside but was worth venturing in. There are some steep steps so does need a bit of fitness to get the most out of the visit.

there are a lot of steep challenging steps so I'd advise against this one for anyone with mobility issues.
