One of the most picturesquely sited fortresses in England. For over six hundred years, the castle has guarded the narrow entrance to the Dart Estuary and the busy port of Dartmouth. John Hawley, privateering mayor of Dartmouth and the prototype of the flambouyant "Shipman" in Chaucer's Canterbury Tales, began this fascinating complex of defences in 1388. Explore the passageways and climb to the top of the Gun Tower for stunning views out to sea. Child friendly and dog friendly.

Spent today here with family and our 5 month old daughter and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We had fantastic weather which meant we had great view points of the picturesque Dartmouth village. The castle itself was a lovely little tour and we had a good time. I would not bring a pram here! - use a harness or don't go as... More

Had a great time in Dartmouth Castle! There's a lot of information on the castle, weaponry and more, with some spectacular views! Only took a little over an hour to fully explore the castle, but it was certainly a fun filled hour!

Because the castle sits mostly below the level of the ticket booth, it's not immediately obvious at a first visit just how much of it there is, nor how well it is curated - in fact I was a little surprised it was going to cost £6.80 each to get in. Once inside, though, it's a fascinating visit and the... More

A lovely walk from the town, and worth it. Interesting hour spent here.. Castle, church and a seal popped his head up too! The EH staff member friendly and informative.

A beautiful walk on a dry or sunny day. Walk past the lovely houses and at the end enjoy a much needed cup of tea or coffee. Well worth it.

Prior to travelling, we accessed the website and were looking forward to spending an entertaining couple of hours. Unfortunately what was found in reality did not compare with that described and we came away disappointed.

Absolutely amazing day out. Fantastic views, great castle telling a fair bit of history and a nice piece of cake with a cup of tea at a cafe overlooking the waters next to it.
