South West Coast Path Walk- Meadfoot & London Bridge
4.5
About
A 4 mile walk on the South West Coast Path based on Torquay harbour, with splendid views out across Tor Bay. The harbour was used by the British Navy as an anchorage during the Napoleonic Wars, and as a result it became a fashionable resort, popular with naval officers. Tropical plants flourish in the numerous parks and many of the gardens attached to the elegant Victorian villas and hotels.

Although the whole coastal path is lovely the best part for me is from Daddy Hole Plain back in to Torquay. There are surprises along the route. The views are stunning and far reaching. The walk takes you through woods, an old building, up and down steps and there are plenty of benches on the way to rest, enjoy the views or have a picnic. Will definitely be doing this section again.

We walked from the Quay to just short of Babbacombe. The path is way marked with an acorn symbol but parts of it require walking on the road. It is very undulating with many steps in places. However, the views along the way made it well worth the effort. We stopped at Meadfoot Beach for a coffee ,Hopes Nose to see the seals and Anstey's Cove prior to exiting the path behind the old Palace hotel to return by bus via the Babbacomb Road.

This is a very pleasant walk, especially if the sun is shining as it offers some of the best views across Tor Bay. Easy parking at Meadfoot. The first part of the walk is across the flat, open grassy Daddyhole Plain (Daddyhole = Devil's Cave) towards the coastguard station. Then it's along a narrow coastal path known as Rockend Walk. Looking left there is a good view of London Bridge - a naturally formed arch of limestone. The path is mainly flat but with a few steps. Towards the end there is a good view of the harbour and Beacon Cove before the path continues through to the sun trap of the slopes of Peaked Tor Cove, where there is seating. The path then continues past the entrance of the Imperial Hotel. It's then a right turn along the road and back to the car park. A pleasant stroll taking not more than one hour at an easy pace.

This is a nice walk - and the views are pleasant. It's not really that outstanding, but nice enough to enjoy as you can.

I stayed at Daishes Devonshire Hotel which is good value for money. At the side of the hotel is a road pointing to Daddyhole Plain approx half mile walk.
Daddyhole Plain is cliffetop plain overlooking the most beautiful English Rivera coastline you will ever see in the uk. In the corner of the Plain field is a coast watch station open to the public. Passing through the gap at the side of the station you are about to experience a one and half mile coastal path walk you will never forget on a nice sunny day. Stunning views all along the path. As photos show do look out for the sea made arch called London Bridge shortly followed by the WW2 lookout pill box manned 24/7 by local defence force looking over Torbay for possible enemy invasion craft whereby they could detonate undersea mines. The path continues to exit by the Imperial Hotel on the edge of Torquay town. Giving the chance to do the walk in reverse.

Meadfoot beach is so charming. This part of the South west coastal path is a delight. A small car park at the end of a lovely green valley leads you to a small rocky curved beach. Beautiful views across the bay takes the eye to Berry Head and the bay ahead. Walk along to Daddyhole plain, with views to die for - then meander along a uneven path to Torquay harbour below. Short and sweet !

A part of the South West Coast Path with absolutely stunning scenery. Free street parking available at Meadfoot or Daddy Cove so no need use the fee paying car parks. Every corner you turn the views are fabulous especially if you are lucky like we were to have the sun shining. Look out for "London Bridge" ..the best view is looking back on it! A lovely way to approach Torquay looking over the marina.

Found it by chance.
Impressive views. There are a few benches along the path; rather handy if you want to have a rest.

We did 2 small walks starting from Meadford Bay walking firstly into Torquay along the coastal path ( 1.5 miles ) and then along the seafront to Cockington Lane and onto Cockington
The second walk went in the opposite direction into Babbacombe ( 9.5 miles return )
The second being the most difficult but also the better of the two
As you would expect on those types of walks it was quite up and down but passed through some really nice woodland paths
Not a walk for the beginner and walking boots are a must but thoroughly enjoyable
Allow half day for either walk

Our host at the hotel we were staying suggested this walk but advised doing it in reverse and this was great advice as it is a generally a downhill walk. We caught the Babacombe Bus and got of the bus just after the Range store and pickec up the coastal path from here and walked back. If you fancy a little longer walk 3hours stay on the bus to Babacombe and walk from there. This is a little more challenging initially walking through a wooded area and the path narrow at some points.
